UNITED STATEs PATENT Prion.
JOHN C. DUEBER, OF CANTON, OHIO.
WATCHGUARD LINK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 597,269, dated January 1 1, 1898.
Application filed August 27, 1897. Serial No. 649,683- iNo model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. DUEBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Guard Links, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specifloat-ion.
My invention relates to improvements in links for watch-guards; and it consists in hingin g to the back of a Watch-guard link a watchc-ase-opener and means for holding it in engagement therewith, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claim ed.
Figure l is a front View of a link of a watchguard, showing the method of attaching the guard thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear View of the same link, showing the method of hinging the watehcasebpener thereto, the dotted lines showing the position of the watchcase-opener when ready for use. Fig. 3 is a side View with the watehcase-opener ready for use.
Similar letters of reference refer to similar parts. i
A represents the base-plate out of which the watch-guard link is formed, which may be of any desired form, and upon its front surface there may be stamped, etched, or engraved any suitable design.
In the drawings I have shown the watchguard link ornamented by a watchcase in relief, but I do not desire to be limited to the use of any particular design, ornamentation, or shape.
Upon either side of the watch-guard link are provided slotted openings a and a through which are passed the several parts of the watch-guard, which may be either of silk or leather, as may be desired.
The link may be made of any desired metal, gold or silver; but the watehcase-opener B, hinged to the back thereof, should be made of hard or tempered metal, as steel, and is substantially trapezoidal in form, the top thereof slightly curved and edged so as to fit between the lid and rim of the watch. The hinge C may be made in any of the well-known forms. I have shown the usual three-part hinge. To retain the plate in position, a detent or catch a is provided at the upper end thereof and attached to the back of the Watch-guard link.
The guard-link maybe Worn Without disclosing the watchcase-opener, and when it is desired to use the watehcase opener the upper portion is disengaged from the catch or detent a and turned down into position, and the Watch-guard link forms a grip by which the same is held While opening the watchcase. hen not in use, it is folded back into position and held by the detent, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Idesire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- The combination in a watch-guard link, of an ornamental face-plate, provided with slotted openings on both sides thereof, a watchcase-opener hinged to the back thereof, and a detent to engage the same, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th dayof August,A. D. 1897.
JOHN G. DUEBER.
