Description

HENRY B. BEACH.
Improvement in Tea-Trays.
No. 114,636. Patented May 9,187t.

HENRY B. BEACH, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 114,636, dated May 9, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEA-TRAYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents l11- Figure l a perspective view, and in Figure 2 a central section.
This invention relates to an improvement in the manufacture of tea-trays orwaiters.
Heretofore, for plated work, these waiters have been cast or struck entirely from the same kind of metal, and this is usually so soft that very little is required to indent the plate; hence, after a little use the plate or bottom of the waiter is indented so as to materially injure its appearance, and this soft metal is very easily scratched, making plated waiters, for these reasons, objectionable.
To overcome these difficulties is the object of my invention, which consists in the manufacture of a tray having a'hard bottom or plate with a soft-metal edge, as more fully hereafter described.
From a sheet of suitable metal of the desired size I construct the bottom A, and to this bottom attach the edge B, formed from soft metal, by casting or otherwise, and which may be ornamented in the usual manner.
The advantages of this manufacture are:
.First, in a bottom which is elastic, and will spring bacl; to its place if from any cause it is sprung out of place; whereas, in the common tray, if the bottom is sprung out of place it wil1, owing to its nou-elasticity, remain in that position.
Second, in consequence of this elasticity and strength of the hard metal the tray may be made much lighter than when formed entire from soft metal.
Third, owing to the hardness of the surface of this plate it is not so liable to be scratched or defaced, and in no way interferes with the ornamentation of the edge or border, as that may be done in the usual manner. The plate itself may be ornamented at no more cost than the common soft metal, as this is chiefly done by machinery.
I claim as my invention- As a new article of manufacturq'a tray composed of a hard-metal plate or bottom with a soft-metal edge or border, substantially as herein described.
