Description

M. GALLAGHER.
Y HINGE. No. 596,698. Patented Jan. 4, 1898.
JYfi.
III/ I,
INVENTOR I WZWW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN GALLAGHER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,698, dated January 4, 1898. Application filed April 23, 1897. Serial No. 633,440. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARTIN GALLAGHER,
A a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hinge in which two plates are movably affixed to and move upon each other when a door or shutter to which they are attached is opened or closed and the object of said improvement is to render more easy the application and adjustment of the hinges, while at the same time being very much more ornamental and sightly than the hinges now in use.
Referring to the drawings which form part of this specification, Figure 1 illustrates a hinge constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of the hinge on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My invention and construction consist, first, of the plate A, Fig. 4, with any means for securing the same to the door-frame; but for this purpose said plate is preferably made and as shown with a screw extension a, with or without the head a second, plates B and B Figs. 1 and 3, having flaps B on each side of said plates, which flaps may be of any design desired; third, plateA is slipped in between the plates B and B and movably affixed to said plates preferably and as shown by a fulcrum or pivot 1).
Either of the plates B or B may be omitted from my construction and only one of such plates used and the flaps secured to it without in the least departing from the essence of my invention; but I prefer the doubleplate arrangement. In the single-plate construction the plate A is fulcrumed to the op posite plate andmoves upon its surface in the same manner as in the double construc: tion.
The plate A and screw extension a may be made in one piece or two and secured together in a proper manner, and likewise with the plates B and B and the flaps B In using my hinge it is first screwed into the door-frame. Slots are made in the door or other article to be hung at the proper point, the width of which slot will correspond with the combined thickness of the plates. The door is then slipped 011 the hinge, the plates entering the slots, the flaps secured by proper means, preferably with screws 11, to the door, on each side thereof, and the same is now hung. When the door is opened or closed, the plates B B turn or move upon plate A and the said door can be turned in both directions. Hence my hinge can be used on what is termed a double-swinging door. The drawings show a door with a bead upon its inner edges, and the hinge is flush with said bead. Generally this bead is not used, and when it is not the hinge is flush with the edge of the door.
The thickness of the plate A will depend upon the weight of the article hung upon it,
but, as shown, is of sufficient strength to support the ordinary door. In the case of an extra-heavy door my intention is to place two of the hinges at the top and two at the bottom and sufficient distance apart to be of great strength and at the same time appear as though they were but one hinge, being connected by a suitable scrollwork passing from the ends or other points of the flaps.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hinge formed of plate A having screw extension a for securing said plate to the door-frame; plates B and B having flaps B for securing said plates to the door; the plate A being pivoted between the plates B and B MARTIN GALLAGHER.
