UNITED STATES PATENT j OFFICE.-
YVILLIAM NEWDYKE, OF DENOON, WISCONSIN.
DOOR.
SEEGIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 682,635, dated September 17, 1901.
Application filed June 13, 1901. Serial No. 64A03. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
citizen of the United States, residing at Denoon, in the county of VVaukesha and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- 1o pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in doors; and its object is to construct a door adapted to swing into two doorways.
A further object is to construct two casings at an angle to each other adapted to be severally closed by a single door, so that when one doorwayis open the other may be closed.
My invention will be found useful in various constructions and situations, particularly in connecting rooms with a hall, closet, or bath-room desired to be used in common by occupants of both rooms; also, in connecting or dividing rooms en suite, andin various other building constructions. Its use will result in the saving of one door and fittings, thereby cheapening construction.
With these and other objects in view my invention is hereinafter described, and illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a construetion embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a '5 horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the hinge used in the construction; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the hinge as attached to door and jamb, parts of which latter are broken away.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, two door-casings 6 and 7 are joined at one side, at an angle to each other, to a s ln= gle jamb 8, to which the door 9 is hung. The face 8 of the jamb is preferably presented at an equal angle to each doorway, and the edge of the hanging-stile of the door is beveled on each side, as at 9*, so that it may swing either way, and for the same purpose a four-leaved hinge 10 is employed, having two leaves 10*, which are adapted to be secured to the door- 56 jamb, and two others, 10 ,Wl1lGh are adapted to be secured to opposite sides of the beveled edge of the door 9. It is evident that other suitable forms of hinge might be used. The hinge is attached midway between the edges of the face 8 of the jamb. The ordinary forms of strike-plates and door-stops may be attached tothe casings; but the lock is pro= vided with a double-beveled knob bolt or spring-latch 11, so that both casings will be readily engaged thereby. The key-bolt may be of the ordinary form. 1
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"- 1. Two door-casings joined together at one side at an angle to each other, a jamb at the junction, and a door hinged to the jamb, the hanging-stile of the door having a double bevel at its edge. 7o
WILLIAM NEWDYKE.
