.NIIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIGMUND MUHLHAUSER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SAM PLE-EXHIBITING BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,607, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed June 27,1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIGMUND MUHLHAUSER, of Cleveland, Ouyahoga county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-Exhibiting Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sample-exhibiting books; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a book embodying my invention. The book is shown open in this figure. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, through a portion of one of the sheets or leaves of the book. Fig. 3 is a section showing the preferred manner of attaching Referring to the drawings, A designates the books cover. The book is provided internally with any suitable number of sampleexhibiting sheets or leaves B, composed, preferably,of cardboard or stiff material. Leaves B are preferably secured to flexible strips 0, extending lengthwise of and suitably secured to the back of the book, and anysuitable filling D, secured to the books back, is interposed between the rear portions of strips 0 to hold said strips 0 and the attached leaves apart and accommodate the location of the samples to be exhibited between opposing pages of adjacent leaves. Leaves B are preferably removably secured to strips 0 by means of removable fastening devices E, and each strip 0 and the leaf attached to said strip are provided with registering holes e, through which the fastening devices extend, as shown in Fig. 3.
Each leaf B is provided with eyelets G, arranged in any suitable number of rows extending up and down the leaf. Said eyelets are for the purpose of receiving the removable fastening devices H, instrumental in secuiiing the sample-receiving cards I to the lea Fastening devices II have their heads h infierial No. 597,186. (No model.)
terposed between the two layers that preferably compose a card I, as shown in Fig. 2, and the prongs of each fastening device that bears a card I extend from said card at one side of the leaf through an eyelet and are clenched upon the opposite side of the leaf. Cards I are preferably gummed upon their outer side, so that upon moistening the gum the samples are readily attached. The sample receiving cards secured to the eyelets of a row of eyelets are arranged alternately upon opposite sides of the eyelet-bearing leaf, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2, so that each card, excepting the uppermost and lowermost cards of the row of cards, is arranged upon one pageof the leaf between two eyelets and opposite the adjacent portions of two cards upon the opposite page of the leaf.
hat I claim is- 1. A sample-exhibiting book having a leaf provided, upon its two sides or pages, with rows of sample-receiving cards, and having the cards of a row of cards upon the one page arranged alternately and in line with the cards of a row of cards upon the other page, and each card or cards of the said two rows of cards overlapping in cross-section the adjacent card or cards of the other row of cards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A sample-exhibiting book having leaves provided with cards that are detachably secured to the leaves and gummed upon their faces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sample-exhibiting book, the combination with a leaf; of a sample-receiving card arranged upon a page of said leaf, and consisting of two layers, an eyelet attached to the leaf at the central portion of said card, and a fastening device having a head embedded within said card between the cards layers and having prongs extending through the leaf and clenched upon the leafs opposite side, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A sample exhibiting book provided with any suitable number of flexible strips arranged lengthwise of and secured-to the books back, suitable filling interposed between the rear portions of said strips, leaves removably secured to the flexible strips and provided tion, in the presenceof two Witnesses, this 23d with suitably-arranged eyelets, and sample- .day of June, 1896.
receiving" cards removably attached to'said Q eyelets 18y suitable fastening devices extend- SIGMUND MUHLHAUbER' 5 ing through the eyelets, substantially as and Witnesses:
for the purpose set forth. 0. H. DORER,
In testimony whereof I sign this specifica- ELLA E. TILDEN.
