BINDER FOR LOOSE MUSIC.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, 1914.
Application filed March 22, 1911. Serial No. 616,118.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUs F. SWAN a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Binders for Loose Music, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to binders for music, pamphlets and similar purposes and its object is to provide a neat and attractive strip of fabric or tough paper having gum on its inner side and several leaves of gummed paper stapled or stitched thereto so that the loose leaves of a piece of music or other pages that need assembling may be held together as will be more fully explained in the following specification, set forth in the claim and illustrated in the d "awings, where:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of several sheets of music held together by my improved binder. Fig. 2 is a view of the binder. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through same. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating a modified construction.
Music and certain pamphlets and papers which are frequently used are often torn apart and the leaves are apt to be separated and thrown away or lost entailing considerable annoyance and expense. It is the object of this invention therefore to overcome this annoyance and at the same time to give to the music a substantial backing and a means for marking and identifying the music.
The binder comprises a back 5 of thin cloth, tough paper or any similar substantial material which will withstand wear and tear and for a more costly but lasting binder leather may be used. This back has an elongated opening 6 on the inner side of which may be placed a card or slip of paper 7 bearing the name of the music or title of the pamphlet and a perforation 8 may also be provided at a convenient point in which may be displayed a number to identify any paper within the binding.
Within the back 5 are carried a series of gummed strips 9 which may be secured therein by means of the staples 10 or they may be stitched together as shown in Fig. 4.
The binders as thus constructed are sold for a small sum and in repairing music or pamphlets the outer leaves are pasted to the inside of the back as shown in Fig. 1, and the inside leaves are pasted to the gunnned strips 9 and when completed the additional thickness at this point makes a solid and substantial back greatly strengthening the musical piece or the pamphlet. When a number of pieces of music are piled upon each other it is easy to immediately find the one sought by referring to the title showing through the opening 6 or to distinguish it by the number in the perforation 8.
It is obvious that any number of inner strips 9 may be inserted for use and those not utilized in the binding torn out and they may be inserted and held in the back by any well. known means, also the openings for the exhibition of the name or number of the music may be of such size and location as desired.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A binder comprising a narrow strip folded longitudinally and provided upon its in nor surface with an adhesive, said strip be ing provided at one side of the fold at a point approximately midway between its ends with an opening, a card secured to the inner surface of the strip and visible through said o ')ening and upon which identifying characters may be inscribed, said strip be ing provided at the opposite side of the fold and in the vicinity of one end with another opening and another card secured to the in nor surface of the strip and upon which a character may be inscribed and which is visible through the last said opening, the portions of the strip at the opposite sides of the fold being adapted to be applied to the outer surfaces of sheets of music at the edges thereof whereby the cards are held in close contact with the sheets of music.
In testimony whereof l atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS F. SWAN.
