DOCUMENT-FILE.
Application filed June 28, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. Parsons, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cicero, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Files, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention is concerned with improvements in document files, and is designed to produce a simple, cheaply constructed file that, within certain limitations, can be expanded or contracted as much as may be desired to include any desired number of documents and still keep the difierent pockets substantially parallel to each other and retain the flat shape of the file.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto a sheet of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the file; Fig. 2 is a section through the same on the line AA of Fig. 1; Fig 3 is a similar view, in section on the line 13-13 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4t is a sectional view through one pocket on the line CC of Fig. 2.
Carrying out my invention in its preferred form, I take a single oblong sheet of some strong flexible material, preferably of Manila paper, and fold it once lengthwise, preferably with the fold at one side of the longitudinal center line. This fold at or forms the bottom of all the pockets, and one of the longitudinal edges 5 forms the top of the file, while the other longitudinal edge 0 forms the top of the pockets proper. I then form several transverse folds cl with alternate folds in the opposite direction, the general direction and character of which folds are shown in Fig. 3, and which may be called Z-folds. I preferably leave on the end of the outermost side of the outermost edge of the outermost pockets a small fold e, which is glued or otherwise secured. to the adjacent portion of the sheet, so as to form pockets closed on both sides and one end, as well as the intermediate pockets.
These document files are designed mainly for distribution as free advertisements, and for that purpose the outermost faces 7 and 9 may have advertising matter showing the dis- Specification of Letters Patent. 4

tributer of the files, while the inner faces h of the pockets may have any desired sort of advertising matter or information printed thereon.
The use of the file will be obvious, as, with the seven transverse folds shown, eight separate pockets are produced, and any desired character of documents may be placed in each pocket, and as the contents of the file increase, the pockets still maintain their substantial parallelism, and the shape of the file in its general cross section still remains substantially rectangular.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. A document file composed of a single sheet of strong flexible material folded once lengthwise along a line some distance from the center line yet far from the edge and several times transversely in Z-folds to form a plurality of deep parallel pockets capable of expansion while still remaining substantially parallel, as and for the purpose described.
2. A document file composed of a single sheet of strong flexible material folded once lengthwise along a line some distance from the center line yet far from the edge and several times transversely in Z-folds to form a plurality of deep parallel pockets capable of expansion while still remaining substantially parallel, the horizontal fold being at one side of the longitudinal center line, as and for the purpose described.
3. A document file composed of a single sheet of strong flexible material folded once lengthwise along a line some distance from the center line yet far from the edge and several times transversely in Z-folds to form a plurality of deep parallel pockets capable of expansion while still remaining substantially parallel, and having the ends thereof secured as shown, as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and aflixed my seal, this 16th day of June, A. D. 1913.
GEORGE G. PARSONS.
