EXTENSIBLE VEHICLE-POLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,349, dated December 28, 1897.

the county of Kittson and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible \Vehicle-Poles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to vehicle-poles; and it has for its object to provide improved means by which the pole can be lengthened or shortened, as found desirable or necessary, and

also to provide improved means for securing the neck-yoke to the pole, so as to prevent the possibility of the same being accidentally detached therefrom.

To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear the invention consists in the construction and the combination of parts,hereinafter particularly described, and then sought to be specifcally defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of a pole, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same parts with the neck-yoke removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the pole and portions'of the attachment by which the pole is lengthened or shortened.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates a pole of any approved form. To the forward portion of this pole I secure a sliding bar 2, which has a member 3, adapted to rest upon the top of the pole, and a member 4, adapted to lie on the under side of the pole, the two members being connected at their forward ends by the neck 5. This slide will be made of any suitable metal, and the top member -has preferablya fiat bar, as illustrated, while the bottom member is preferably circular in cross-section and made to lie in a groove 6, formed in the under side of the pole, which groove will serve to guide the slide in its backand-forth movement and to prevent lateral movement of the same. The slide passes through keepers 7, of which there may be any desired number secured to the pole, said keepers being of any approved form, but being illustrated as consisting of metallic bands passing around the pole and securing the slide thereto, so that the latter may be free to be shifted back or forth when unlocked for extending or shortening the length of the pole, as occasion or necessity may require.

The lower member 4: of the slide is formed with a seat Sin one side,which seat is designed to receive the tongue 9 of a pawl or dog 10, the shank of which may be formed of spring metal, so as normally to hold the tongue in one of the notches 8, and thus secure the slide to its adjustment on the pole. A staple or guard 11 may be placed over the pawl or dog 10, so as to shield the same and limit its outward movement. The notches 8 are preferably formed by cutting away portions of a flange 12, which will extend from one side of the circular portion of the member 4, as illus trated in Figs. 3and 4 of the drawings.

The forward portion of the slide 2 at its under side is formed with an extension 13, which lies below the forward portion of the lower member 4 of the slide, so as to form a recess 14, adapted to receive the ring 15 or equivalent part of the neck-yoke 16. This extension 13 may be strengthened by means of a brace 17, connecting it to the under part of the member 4 between the opposite ends.

The ring or equivalent part of the neck-yoke 16 is held in the recess 14 by a pivoted hook 18, which has a nose 19, adapted to lie across the front portion of the recess 14:, so as to prevent the ring 15 from slipping out of the recess. A suitable spring 20 bears against the rear portion of the hook 18, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 2, so as to hold said hook in front of the recess 1i. The portion of the hook 18 above its nose 19 lies within the space between the upper and lower members of the slide 2, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and in this way the hook is housed or protected against injury and against being accidentally struck, so as to unintentionally unfasten the same.

The opposite ends of the neck-yoke 16 are provided with clevises 21 to receive the chains or straps which usually extend from the horsecollar, and each clcvis is provided with an antifriction-roller 22, so as to reduce the friction and wear of the strap where it moves in the clevis.

I have illustrated and described with particularity the preferred details of construction of the several parts of my invention; but it is obvious that changes can be made in minor details without departing from the essential features of my invention.

Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is l. The combination with the pole, of the extensible slide to lengthen or shorten the pole, said slide consistingof the two members lying on opposite sides of the pole and joined together at their forward ends by a connecting-neck, an extension beneath the forward portion of the lower member of the slide to .form a recess to receive the neck-yoke ring,

a catch located between the two members of the slide at their forward end and having a nose extending through the lower member and lying across the mouth of the recess formed by said extension, guides for said slide to move in, and a dog to hold the slide to its adjustment, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. The combination with the forward portion of the pole, of the adjustable slide to lengthen or shorten the pole, said slide comprising two members lying on opposite sides of the pole and connected together by a neck at the forward ends, the recess formed in a part of the slide to receive a part of a neckyoke, and a hook located between the opposite members of the slide and having a part to close the opening to the recess in the slide so as to hold the neck-yoke to the slide, sub stantially as and for the purposes described.

3. The combination with the forward portion of a pole, of an adjustable slide to lengthen or shorten the pole, said slide comprising two members lying on opposite sides of the pole, one of said members being provided with a flange formed with notches, and a locking dog attached to the pole and adapted to engage said notches to hold the slide in its adjustments, substantially as and for the purposes described.
