ATTACH E TFOR GIG BOXES. No. 595,939. Patented Dec. 21,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. COEY, OF FAIRFIELD, WASHINGTON.
ATTACH M ENT FOR CIGAR-BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,939, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed March 17,1897. Serial No. 627,918. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES A. (JOEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Cigar- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
In the arrangement of cigar-boxes in showcases it is customary to bend the lid or cover over upon the back of the box and secure it in place by brads, in order that in addition to having the box open the said lid forms a support by which the box is inclined and the cigars exposed to a better advantage. It has been found that in attaching the lid in the ordinary manner heretofore practiced the brads often pass through the box and present sharp projections which puncture the wrapper of a cigar and practically destroy the sale of the same. With the idea of holding the lid against the back without requiring the use of brads I have devised a cheap, simple, and effective clamp for the purpose, presenting tongues or members which can be readily passed into engagement with the lid and back of the box to thoroughly embrace these parts and hold them in proper relative engagement.
Having the above objects in view, my invention consists in the particular construction or manner of forming the clamp, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawin gs,formin g part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of myinvention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the clamp or holder detached, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the clamp or holder.
My improved clamp or holder for use in connection with cigar-boxes for the purpose of holding the lid securely against the back is preferably made up of sheet metal to form the depending tongues or plates 1 1, 2, and 3, which are connected to each other, as shown,
the parts connecting the outer tongue 3 with the adjoining tongue 2 being lower than the part which connects the intermediate tongue with the forward tongues. The intermediate or central tongue 2 is tapered to a point and provided with sharpened edges by which it can be forced through the fabric or material which forms the hinge of the back, and it is apparent that instead of having the forward part of the clamp present two tongues the said tongues could be connected.
In making up the clamp or holder the sheet metal is of the proper configuration to form the blank, after which it is slit or cut to form the intermediate tongue when the blank is stamped in the proper shape. By forming the clamp or holder of sheet metal it can be manufactured very cheaply.
In placing the holder in engagementwith a cigar-box the lid or cover is first turned against the back, after which the holder is pressed in position to have the outer tongue or plate 3 engage the outer surface of the lid, the tongue 2 being passed in betweenthe lid and back and the tongue 1 engaging the inner side of said back. By this engagement of the several tongues with the back and lid the said lid will be prevented from swinging upon its hinge, and the box can therefore be supported at its rear end by the lid.
The lower end of the outer tongue or retaining-plate 3 may be turned upon itself, as shown, when the said tongue is brought to a point. This will prevent the point digging into the lid when the clamp or holder is being applied.
This device presents a very effective holder and one that can be readily applied and detached, thereby making it possible to use the same upon different boxes and an indefinite length of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A clamp or holder for holding the lid of a cigar-box against its back, made up of a single sheet of metal which is stamped or otherwise formed to present three depending tongues parallel with each other, the intermediate or central tongue being tapered and its edges sharpened and the tapered end-of
