SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,930, dated December 21, 1897.

Beit known that I, JOHN WV. WILLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springiield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and Ido herebydeclare the following to'be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make 'and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in detachable trundle-beds, and has for its object the production of a childs bed designed to be attached securely to one of Ythe side pieces of the bedstead and to be detached therefrom and folded into small compass when not in use.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the bed applied as in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bed detached and folded. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the connection between the end and side sections. Fig. 4 is a similar View of the connection between the end sections and the securing-plate.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary bedstead consisting of the side pieces 2, head-board 3, and footboard 4.

5 indicates the trundle-bed, secured to supporting-plates 6, provided at their upper extremities with securing-hooks 7, rectangular in form and designed to be placed over the upper edge of one of the side pieces 2.

The bed-frame 5 is composed of a side section 8, end section 9, hinged to the side section S, and the bottom fralne 10, carried, in the manner to be described, by the bed-posts 11, located at the corners of the bed-frame.

The side section S is preferably composed, as illustrated, of two parallel tubular strips l2 and 13, provided at their opposite extremities with collars 14, designed to receive the bed-posts 11, which are provided upon their upper extremities with screw-threads designed to engage the internal threads of Swivel-sockets 16, into which are screwed, as indicated at 17, tubular strips or bars 17, similar to the bars 1,2 and 13, and screwed at their opposite extremities into internallythreaded sockets 18, formed upon the faces of the supporting-plates 6.

The bars 17, referred to, constitute the upper sides or edges'of the end sections 9, and

24 24 indicate axially-apertured caps screwed upon the lower extremity of the socket 22 and tubular extremity 23, and through which are designed to extend pistonrods 25 of pistons 26, movable within the hollow bed-post 11.

26 26 indicate coiled springs surrounding the rods 25 between the caps 24 and the pistons 26 and designed to retain the said pistons in an elevated position. Therods 25 are provided at their lower extremities with eyes 27, designed to be engaged by eyebolts 2S, passing through the bottom frame 10, and secured by wing-nuts 29, abutting them against its under surface. y

30 indicates a series of vertical hangers placed at equal distances and designed, with the tubular bars or strips of the side and end sections, to form a suitable frame for preventing the child or other occupant from falling from the bed and preventing derangement of the bedclothes.

It will be observed that by reason of the construction illustrated and described the bed may be readily folded into small compass by unscrewing the thumb-nuts, raising the supporting-hooks from engagement with the side piece 2, and iinally folding the end sections inward upon the side section S and the several sections down upon the bottom, where the parts may be secured in any suitable manner.

When the bed is in use, as indicated by Fig. 1 of the drawings, 'the bottom will be yieldinglysustained by the pistons 26 and springs 27, and will thus aord a light, springy bed bottom or support calculated to insure the com-fort of a child or other occupant.

In order, however, to perfect the device to a still higher degree, I provide a retainingflange 3l around the inner edge of the bedframe 10 and extend longitudinal-and trans- IOO verse spring-Wires across the open bottom from the fianges 3l, which, in addition to sustaining the sp1ing-\vire bottom7 are designed to retain the bedclothes in place.

If desired, an adjustable supporting-leg may be provided upon the front edge of the bottom l0, and preferably consists of a pivoted leg-frame 34, provided with a longitudinally-adjustable leg 35, secured in its adjusted positions by means of the set-screw'36, as illustrated.

Vhile I have illustrated and described what appears at this time to be the preferable einbodiment of my invention, I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary such details at Will within the scope of my invention, as it is obvious that the bottom may be yieldingly supported in a variety of ways and that, in fact, the entire structure may be changed and modilied to an indefinite extent without departing from the scope of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a device of the character described, the combination with hollow bed-posts and movable sections,of spring-supported pistons, movable within the hollow bed-posts and a bottom frame operatively connected to said pistons, substantially as specified.

2. The combination with supporting-plates provided with supporting-hooks, of a bedframe carried by the plates, and a rigid bottom yieldingly carried by the bed-frame, substantially as specified.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with supporting-plates and hollow bed-posts of bed-sections carried thereby and a bed-bottom yieldingly supported by the hollow bed-posts and bed-plates, substantially as specified.

4. In a device of the'character described, the combination with a pair of hollow bedposts of folding bed-sections carried thereby supporting-plates secured to a plurality of said sections spring-actuated pistons carried by the bed-posts and supporting-plates respectively and a yielding bed-bottom operatively connected with said pistons, substantially as specified.
