UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
GEORGE WONDERS, OF JOHNS'IOVN, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIGURE TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,749, dated December 21, 1897.
l Application tiled April 9, 1897. Serial No. 631,343. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WoNDERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full and complete speciiication, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to toys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved mechanical toy which is operated by air; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each 'of the views, and in whichg Figure l is a central longitudinal section of my improved toy, and Fig. 2 a sectional plan view thereof.
In the practice of my invention I provide an oblon g block 5, which is formed at one end into a mouthpiece, as shown at 6, and which is provided centrally with a wheel 7, which is mounted in a transverse vertical openingS, which is formed in said block, and said wheel consists of a circular disk which is provided at one side with radial plates or vanes 9.
The oblong block 5 is provided with a longitudinal chamber 10, which extends along one side of the opening 8, in which the wheel 7 is mounted, and through said block almost to the end thereof opposite the mouthpiece 6, and the shaft 11 of the wheel 7 is projected through this chamber and provided with a crank 12.
Formed in the end of the block opposite the mouthpiece 6 is a vertical opening 13, and I also provide a toy figure which represents a boy, and the lower portion of the body 14: of said gure is secured in the upper part of the opening 13 in the block 5, and pivotally connected with the lower part of the body 14 is a block 15, to which the legs 16 are secured,
and secured to the lower side of the block 15 is a rod 17, which is pivotally connected with a rod 18, which extends through the chamber 10 and is pivotally connected with the crank 12 of the shaft 11.
The rod 1S is provided with a ring or eye l19, by means of which connection With the rod 17 of the block 15 is made, and passing upwardly through the body of the figure is a rod 20, which is also connected with said eye or ring 19, and the upper end of the. rod 2O is connected with a block 21, which is pivotally supported in the upper part of the body 14 of the figure, and the head 22 of the figure is provided with a neck 23, which is connected by means of a rod 24 with the block 21, and the arms 25 of the figure are secured to the block 21.
The oblong block 5 is also provided With a longitudinal bore 26, which extends from the mouthpiece 6 to the opening 8, in which the wheel 7 is mounted, and by blowing through the bore 26, which is downwardly inclined, as shown in Fig. 1, the wheel 7 will be revolved, and this operation will operate the legs 16 and the arms 25 of the toy figure. The legs 16 are preferably composed of tWo parts, which are pivotally connected at the knees, as shown at 27, and by blowing through the bore 26 the arms and legs of the igure will be causedto move rapidly or otherwise, according to the pressure of the air, and said arms will rise and fall, and the movement of the legs will resemble the movement of a boy when walking.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is intended to amuse and interest children, and it will be apparent that changes in and modiiications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or4 sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent- A toy, comprising an oblongb block, Which is provided centrally with a vertical trans-v verse opening, a wheel mounted therein, and provided with radial plates or vanes, said block being provided at one end with a mouthpiece, and with a longitudinal bore which extends therefrom, and which communicates with the opening in which said wheel is mounted, and said block being also provided with a IOO longitudinal Chamber through which the shaft of the wheel extends, and in the end thereof, opposite the mouthpiece with a Vertical` opening in which is mounted a toy gure, said Iigure being secured in said opening, and the legs thereof, being connected with a block which is pivoted in said opening, and which is in 0peratve connection With said wheel, said figure being also provided in the upper part of the body thereof, with a. block which is pivoted therein, and with which therms of the gure are connected, said last-named block and that with which the legs are connected being also ence of the subscribing witnesses, this 6th day of April, 1897.
