MUSICAL AND ANIMATED TOY PIPE Filed Feb. 2, 1946 [Wm/Win52 $47795 (4/ 5760mm Patented Aug. 5, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MUSICAL AND ANIMATED TOY PIPE Mathew A. Strumor, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application February 2, 1946, Serial No. 645,058
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to toy pipes, that is pipes constructed substantially along the lines of smoking pipes but provided with modifications in structure to accommodate them for the use of children as toys, and one object is the provision of a toy pipe adapted to be blown into by the user and having means movably mounted in the bowl of the pipe adapted to actuate a toy figure positioned above the bowl and visible to the user and other observers.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device in cooperation with the pipe, of a nature to utter or issue a tone or noise, such as, for instance, a whistle, when the pipe is blown into.
The above general as well as additional and more specific objects will become apparent in the following description, wherein characters of reference refer to like-numbered parts in the accompanying drawing. It is to be noted that the drawing is intended for the purpose of illustration only, and that it is neither desired nor intended to limit the invention necessarily to any or all details of construction shown excepting insofar as they may be deemed essential to the invention.
Referring briefly to the drawing,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view, with parts broken away and partly in section, of a toy pipe provided with one form of animated toy.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1, with parts broken away and partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view through the bowl and stem of a similarly constructed pipe, but showing another form of animated toy.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing a still further modification of animated toy.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral ll] indicates a bowl having a pipe stem l I extending therefrom. A vertical stem or shaft II is journaled in the floor of the bowl, and paddlelike blades l3 extend radially therefrom. On the upper portion of the shaft l2, which extends above the rim of the bowl, a figure [4 representis blown into; in fact, owing to the paddle wheels l3 the whistle will give off pulsating sounds.
In the modification of Figs. 3 and 4, the bowl ma has a horizontal shaft ll rotatable therein, provided with a crank it and paddle blades 19. A link 20 rises through an opening 22 in the cover 23 and is joined to the body of a figure 2| having articulated legs 2l suspended to a point close to, or in touch with, the cover 23. It is apparent that when the shaft ll is rotated by blowing into the pipe, the figure 2| will be actuated to simulate a dancer or jigger.
In the modification of Fig. 5, a horizontal shaft provided with paddle blades 26, is shown at 25, rotatably mounted in the bowl illb, and provided with two spaced cranks 21. From each crank 21 a link or rod 28 rises through an opening 30 in the cover 29, and these links are secured to the figures 3! representing boxers facing each other. It is apparent that as the shaft 25 rotates the figures 31 are actuated to simulate boxers sparring with one another.
Obviously, modifications in the form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
A toy pipe comprising a pipe bowl and a pipe stem, said stem extending from said bowl on a line parallel with a diameter of said bowl, said bowl having a floor and a cover and having a shaft rotatably mounted therein, a toy device movably mounted on said cover, said shaft having paddle blades thereon adapted to be actuated by the force of air blown through the stem into said bowl to rotate said shaft, means connecting said shaft with said toy device for actuation of said to device upon rotation of said shaft, said bowl having a tubular extension on the forward side thereof in alignment with said diameter and communicating with said bowl, said extension having a whistle mounted therein and providing an exit for the air blown into said stem.
