i V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE-F. WEHR, OF ROCHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE PHOENIX GLASS COMPANY, OF WEST VIRGINIA.
GLOBE, CHIMNEY, AND SHADE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,682, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed July 22, 1897. Serial No. 645,609. (No'modeL) -To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. WEHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Globe, Chimney, and Shade Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to a combination globe, chimney, and shade support, and has for its object the provision of a combined globe and chimney adapted for use in connection with Welsbach burners.
My invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my combined globe and chimney with a shade in position thereon. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the globe and chimney without the shade.
A designates the body of the combined globe and chimney, which consists of a single piece of glass of cylindrical form, having its lower edge contracted inwardly, as at B, and having a shoulder at 0, upon which rests a gasket D, of asbestos or other suitable nonconducting refractory material, this gasket being unattached to either the globe or shade.
The upper end of the combined globe and chimney is contracted above the shoulder O, forming a chimney E, which is of somewhat less diameter than the opening in the bottom of globe A and is small enough to pass freely through the opening in a shade of the ordinary size. I v
F designates the shade, which is of any desired construction and which rests, as shown in the sectional view, Fig. 1, upon the gasket D, the chimney portion E passing through the opening in the shade without contacting with the sides of the same. The shade when in position presses down upon the top of the gasket, and the shoulder of the combined globe and chimney is wider than the opening through the shade, so that the shade could rest directly on the shoulder and be sustained in position thereby without the intervention of the gasket. It is to be noted that the chimney portion E of the combined globe and chimney is of suflicientlength to project above the top of the shade, so as to protect the latter from the heat of the flame.
The device is cheap, simple, and efficient, no metallic parts whatever being required, and the construction is such that the combined globe and chimney may be removed.
from the burner and cleaned when necessary.
The lower end of the globe A is roughened, acid-etched, or otherwise rendered opales cent for the purpose of softening the light which passes through that portion.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with agas-globe consisting of a cylindrical body of glass, having a shoulder formed near its upper edge, and a contracted portion above such shoulder, constituting a chimney, of a gasket of non-conducting refractory material resting upon such shoulder and a glass shade having a neck which is of lessdiameter than the body of the chimney and which rests directly upon said gasket, the gasket being unattached to the globe or shade, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a globe consisting of a cylindrical body of glass having a wide body portion to inclose the flame, a contracted chimney above said body portion and an intermediate shoulder rounded into both body and chimney, of a shade having a neck of less interior diameter than the body and concentric with the curvature of the shoulder of the globe, and a non-conducting refractory gasket composedof a flexible band fitted to the shoulder so as to conform to the curvature of the latter and the coincident curvature of the shade-neck, said gasket being unattached to the shade or globe, substantially as shown and described.-
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. WEHR.
Witnesses: v
S. G. REED, JOHN W. CARNAGIE.
