To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPi-I A. BURKLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Incandescent Lights, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to attachments for incandescent lights, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, means for protecting the lower end of a lantern and the neck of the globe when mounted on t-he burner, the said means acting as a shield to surround the lower end of the mantle and acting as an interposed shield between the neck of the globe and flame to prevent the flame attacking not only the neck, but also the body of the globe where it merges into the neck thereof.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide a protecting device for the lower ends of the mantles of incandescent lights, as well as for the globe neck, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, conveniently positioned in the burner body and inexpensive to manufacture.
1With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section of an incandescent burner, with globe attached, showing the adaptation therewith of the shield or mantle and globe protecting device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shield or mantle and globe protecting device in accordance with this invention, Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings in detail, l denotes a burner body for use in connection with an incandescent light and which is of known construction, 5 indicates an incandescent mantle, and 6 designates a globe provided with a neck 7 which is positioned in the burner Ibody in the well known manner. The burner body 4c includes inclined braces 8 for supporting the burner tube.
The shield or protecting device for the lower end of the mantle and for the neck 7 of the globe consists, as shown in Fig. 2, of a hollow cylindrical member 9 having projecting from its lower edge, a plurality of bendable retaining lugs l0. The shield is mounted in the burner body as clearly illustrated in Fig. l and is of a height to project above the neck 7 and above the lower end ofthe mantle 5. The retaining lugs 10 are bent to engage the inner faces of the inclined braces 8. Under such conditions the shield is fiXedly maintained in an upright position within the burner body, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. Owing to the height of the shield, the lower end of the mantle 5 is protected and the shield also prevents the flame from attacking the neck 7, and where the body of the globe merges into the neck.
The shield when mounted is interposed between the attaching member 11 for the mantle 5 and the inner face of the neck 8, and projects as before stated above the lower end of the mantle and by such an arrangement the protection, as herein stated for the mantle and neck, will be obtained.
The modified form as shown in Fig. 3 consist-s of a hollow cylindrical member 12, having its upper and lower edges uninterrupted, that is to say, the form shown in Fig. 3 is not provided with the attaching lugs 10.
