ilhlllTED @TATEfl UFTETE FREDERICK 'W. L. DIRESSEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR 1T0 DRESSEL RAILWAY LAMP WORKS, A CORPORATION OF NEW YOBK.
LONG-TIME BURNER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1%1? TO (M whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnnnnniok Dunssnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Long-Time Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex act specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lamp burners, and the same has for its ob ject to provide a simple, eflicient and reliable long time burner for use in signal and other lamps.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a long time burner by means of which the consumption of oil will be materially reduced without impairing the brilliancy of the flame.
Further said invention has for its object to reduce the size of the flame, and still obtain a pure white light.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a burner in which the means for conducting air to the flame necessary to sup port combustion is so brought into contact therewith as to produce a small, attenuated flame of great brilliancy and whiteness.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement ot' parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, wherein like numorals of reference indicate like parts, Fig
ure 1 is a top view showing one form of' burner constructed according to, and embodying my said invention; Fig. 2, isa central vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.; Fig. 3, is a detail section onthe line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the upper end of the wick tube, and associated parts, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail perspective views, partly broken away, showing the deflecting hood, and flame shield, respectively.
In said drawings designates the base portion of the burner having a reduced end 11 provided with screw-threads tor application to the oil font, and a convexed top 12 having an annular shoulder or head. along its edge.
14 denotes the wick tube which is centrally arranged in the base portion 10,. and
has its lower end secured to the bottom of said base portion, and its upper end projecting above the convex top 12. Upon the base portion. 10, and engaging the annular shoulder or bead 13 is disposed a ring 15 which is provided with four equally spaced uprights 16, 16, between which the air for supporting combustion is admitted to the burner.
17 denotes a chimney gallery which is supported upon the upper ends of the uprights 16, 16. By preference the uprights 16, 16 and the chimney gallery 17 are made integral. The chimney gallery 17 is provided along its edge with outwardly extending ears 18, 18 which are provided with openings 19, 19, through which extend upwardly the free ends of spring fingers 20, 20. The said spring fingers 20, 20 are provided at their lower ends with inwardly and upwardly extending portions, and said inwardly and upwardly extending portions are secured to the uprights 16, 16 by lugs, not seen, struck up from said uprights. The upper free ends of said spring fingers 20, 20 are bent sharply outward in order to engage the lower end of a chimney, and hold the same in position upon said gallery.
22 denotes a cone which is provided at its lower edge with supports 23, 23 which extend outwardly a short distance to the inner sides of the uprights 16, 16, and then downwardly to the upper surface of the top 12, and have their vertical portions secured to, and against the inner sides of the uprights 16, 16. The said cone has its upper end slightly flattened upon four sides in order to produce a substantially square opening at the upper end thereof, and at two of its opposite edges said cone is provided with inclined deflecting. blades 24-, 24; which extend upwardly and inwardly, and have their parallel edges slightly rounded. The cone 22 is so positioned about the wick tube 1 1' that its upper edge shall be slightly above the top of said wick tube.
Within the cone 22, and surrounding the upper end of the wick tube 14 is disposed a guard. shield 25 consisting of a V-shaped plate having a ci-cular opening 26 in its base of appreeiab y greater diameter than the exterior diameter of said wick nbe, to form an annular air space between the edge of said opening and the outer side of said wick tube. The width of said guard shield is substantially equal to the distance along I the upper edge of the cone between the deflecting blades 24:, 24, and thus provides openings intermediate the inner sides of said cone, and the inclined edges of said guard shield. From the horizontal upper edges of the guard shield 25 extend downwardly and outwardly tongues 27 27 whose inclination and length correspond with that of the cone 22.
28, 28 denote ears which extend from the loweredge of the cone, midway between the supports 23, 23. The said ears are bent in wardly and upwardly to embrace firmly the lower ends of the tongues 27, 27 of the guard. shield 25 in order to hold said guard shield dul-y in position. with said cone and surrounding said wick tube.
29 denotes a wick-raising shaft which is suitably mounted in the base portion 10, and provided at its inner end with a spur wheel 30 extending through an opening in the wick tube, and at its outer end said shaft 29 is provided with an operating wheel 31.
The operation of the burner is largely obvious, but it may be noted that in operation the main supply of air necessary to support combustion is conducted to the flame between the inner wall of the cone 22, and the inclined edges of the guard shield 25. The flattening of the flame is prevented largely by the supplying of air through the annular space intermediate the base of the V-shaped guard shield 25 and the outer side of the wick tube 14 which serves to conduct a thin tubular sheet of air to the flame, and at the same time act to confine the same in order to form a small cylindrical flame of great whiteness. The operation of the flame is further controlled by the action of the deflecting blades 24, 24c.
It will thus be noted that by means of my invention I am enabled to provide a burner yielding a reduced flame, of great whiteness, and consuming a minimum of oil.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure byLetters Patent is'- 1. A lamp burner comprising a wick tube, a support therefor, a cone mounted upon said support and surrounding said wick tube, and a guard shield secured at its ends to said cone, and provided at its base with .an opening through which the upper end of said wick tube extends; said opening being appreciably larger in diameter than said wick tube to provide an annular air space between the edge of said opening and said wick tube, substantially as specified.
2. A lamp burner comprising a wick tube, a support therefor, a cone mounted upon said support and surrounding said wick tube, said cone having a squared upper end, deflecting blades extending upwardly and inwardly from opposite sides of said cone, and a V-shaped guard shield having its opposite end secured to the edge of said cone intermediate said deflecting blades, and provided at the junction of its inclined memhere with an opening surrounding the upper end of said wick tube; said opening being of such diameter relative to said wick as to form an annular air space intermediate the edge of said opening, and the outer side of said wick tube, substantially as specified.
3. A lamp burner comprising a wick tube, a support therefor, a cone mounted upon said support and surrounding the upper end of said wick tube, oppositely-arranged, defleeting blades provided upon opposite sides of said cone and extending upwardly and inwardly therefrom, an upwardlyflaring guard shield having an opening therein. to receive the upper end of said wick tube to provide an annular air space between the edge of said opening and said wick tube, and oppositely arranged supporting members thereon, oppositely disposed ears extending from the lower edge of said cone and engaging said supporting members whereby to maintain said guard shield in position within said cone, substantially as specified.
4. A lamp burner comprising a wick tube, a support therefor, a cone mounted upon said support and surrounding the upper end of said wick tube, said cone having a squared, open upper end, deflecting blades arranged upon two opposite sides of said cone and extending upwardly and inwardly, a V-shaped guard shield having an opening therein and surrounding the upper end of said wick tube to provide an annular air space between the edge of said opening and said wick tube, and oppositely arranged supporting members on said guard shield engaging the inner wall of said cone intermediate said deflecting blades, and oppositely arranged ears extending from the lower edge of said cone, and engaging the lower ends of said guard shield supporting members, whereby to support said guard shield in position within said cone, substantially as specified.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 18th day of November, nineteen hundred and twelve.
