Description

l. H. IRWIN.
Lamp-Chimney Holders.
no. 134,063. Patented Dec.17,1872.
1 m f jg AM. PIIUTO-LITHOGIMFHIC cmLr/osaunuzis FROEfSSJ JOHN H. IRWIN, on PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
iMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHiMNEV HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 3 1,063, dated December 17, 1872.
To all whomtt may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. IRWIN, of
Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in .Ohimney- Holders for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation, showing my device in position; and Fig. 2 shows the manner of constructing the metallic cap-supporting elastic wires.
This invention relates to that class of lamps which consume volatile oils, and therefore require the use of a chimney; and it consists in a device arranged to support and hold the chimney at a point near its upper end for the purpose of obtaining greater steadiness and security against accidental displacement, as well as to avoid the shadow thrown around the base of the lamp by devices arranged to hold and secure the chimney by its lower end.
That others may fully understand my in vention I will particularly describe it.
Heretofore lampehimneys have been held in position by fastenings located at their lower ends, and such fastenings were always liable to objection, because the chimneys were never uniform in size or shape, and therefore said fastenings were never sure to hold the chimney firmly and steadily. Said fastenings either surround and inclose the bottom of the chimney or require an enlargement thereof, and in either case the holding devices enlarge the.
adow around the base of the lamp. In the drawing accompanying and making a part of this specification, A represents a' glass chimney seated upon the top of the burner B, no part of said seat being larger than the bottom of said chimney, which is not surrounded or inclosed thereby. O is a metallic band surrounding the top of the chimney A, and connected to the base of the burner B or some other convenient part of the .of breakage by unequal expansion.
lamp by the wires D. By these means the chimney may be securely held in proper position with respect to the burner and flame, with no possibility of accidental displacement without violence, with complete steadiness, and without any shadow in addition to that cast by the oil-pot and base of the lamp.
In order to adapt the holder to the variations in size between different chimneys, it is required to impart elasticity to the chimneyholder; and this may be done by means of the springs c 0 along the edge of the band 0, or by the elasticity of the wires D, the band (J then being formed so as to press downward upon the upper end of the chimney A. ,It is advantageous to shorten the chimney A as much as possible so as to increase the facility of cleaning it, and also decrease the" liability They have heretofore been made partly of glass and partly of metal.
hen I employ a metallic cap, E, the wire D is made continuous, as shown in the drawing, Fig. 2, and has suflicicnt elasticity to permit said cap to be turned over sidewise, sufficiently far to permit the removal of the chimney.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is-- 1. An elastic chimney-holder arranged to grasp and hold the chimney at ornear its upper end, in combination with a seat, to keep the bottom of the chimney in place, substan tially asand for the purpose set forth.
2. The removable cap E, in combination with holder-wires D extending up from the base of the burner and the chimney-glass A, substantially as setforth.
In testimony that I claim the above as my invention witness my hand.
' J. H. IRWIN.
