NITED STATES PATENT HENRY P. PFEFFER AND FRANK T. MAYER,OF NEIN ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CHIMNEY-HOLDER FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,007, dated December 13, 1898. Application filed June 29, 1898- Serial No- 684,'760. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, HENRY P. PFEFFER and FRANK T. MAYER, citizens of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Chimney-Holders for Lamp-Burners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in chimney-holders for lamp-burners; and it has for its object the production of a cheap, simple, and efficient device which enables a 1am pchimney to be normally held securely in place upon the burner and yet when desired to be tilted over for the purpose of lighting the lamp, cleaning the wick, &c.
Our invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a lamp burner provided with our improved chimney-holder attachment, the chimney being shown in its normal vertical position in full lines and the said chimney and the tilting holder being shown in dotted lines in the tilted position. Fig. 2 represents a fragmentary sectional View through the burner, showing the construction of the hinge member thereon and the arrangement of the stop for the tilting attachment. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of said tilting chimney-holder attachment, and Fig. 4 represents an elevation of the burner as seen from the leftiu Fig. 1.
The burnerA is of a common construction, provided with the usual spring-uprights A, usually fourin number, but two adjacent ones of which are omitted for the purpose of our invention.
At that side of the lamp-burner upon which the hinge of the cap A is located the two usual spring-uprights are omitted, and a curved hollow metallic frame B, of such shape and width as to receive snugly the edge of a lamp-chimney, is hinged by means of alug 1), formed centrally upon its base, as in Fig. 3. The lug b has a central opening through which passes a wire I), inclosed in the lower rim of the base or platform of the burner upon which the chimney rests, as seen in Fig. 2, a notch or slot being out into the said rim of the base of the burner to admit the lug b. When in its upright position, the hollow frame B so rests upon the rim of the base of the burner as that its interior curved chamber or pocket 5 lies in a vertical plane coincident with the vertical plane of the base of the chimney in position upon the burner.
The two spring-arms A upon the opposite side of the burner from that of the hinged frame B serve to hold the chimney securely in its vertical position against accidental displacement and yet allow the chimney to be tilted over with the hinged frame B when desired.
In order to prevent the chimney being tilted over too far and in order to support the chimney and hinged frame, we provide a curved stop 0, which is secured to the under side of the burner, as at c, and is strengthened by a brace 0 The curved outer end of the stop is so arranged that when the chimney and hinged frame B have been tilted over sufficiently to give free access to the lamp-Wick for lighting or cleaning the same the said frame B will come in contact with the point 0 of said curved stop, and its further downward movement will be arrested.
It will thus be seen that we provide an exceedingly simple, cheap, and eflicient attachment for holding the chimney during the process of lighting the lamp and doing away entirely with the inconvenience and trouble ordinarily encountered in replacing the chimney upon the burner provided simply with the four spring-uprights generally use Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a lamp-burner, the combination with a fixed spring-upright for holding the chimney, of a frame provided with an interior pocket adapted to receive the edge of the base of the chimney, and hinged to the edge of the burner in such a manner as to allow of the tilting outwardly thereof, and means for limiting the outward movement of said hinged frame, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp-burner, the combination with a fixed spring-upright for holding the chimney, of a frame provided with an interior pocket adapted to receive the edge of the base of the chimney and hinged to the edge of the burner in such a manner as to allow of the tilting outwardly thereof, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a lamp-burner provided with a plurality of spring-uprights A, of a curved hollow frame B hinged to the edge of the burner at a point farthest from said spring-uprights, and adapted to receive the edge of the base of a lamp-chimney within its hollow chamber or pocket, and a fixed support secured to the base of the burner for supporting the chimney and the hinged frame in their tilted position, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY P. PFEFFER. FRANK T. MAYER. \Vitnesses:
JOHN J. SAUCIER, J. H. FERGUSON.
