' PATENT T rrrc.
FRANK KOENIG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAMP-CHIMNEY GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,329, dated January 27,1885.
Application filed April 9, 1884.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK KOENIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Chimney Guards, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which the figure is a side elevation of alampchimney guard embodying my invention, the object of which latter is the prevention of the breaking or cracking of a lamp-chimney due to sudden or excessive heat, the means employed being hereinafter fully set forth.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a glass chimney, (shown by dotted lines,) the shape whereof may be changed relatively to the nature of a gas or other lamp or light employed.
B represents a bridge adapted to be suspended from the top of the chimney or sustained within the same. From said bridge depends a vertically-arranged coil, 0, the ends whereof are pointed, having an eye, a, which enters an eye, I), of the bridge, so that the coil hangs freely in position and has its upper end above the bridge, thus permitting the heat in the coil G to be radiated outside of the body of the chimney, and its body and lower end within the chimney, it being noticed that the coil and bridge are made of wire; but it is evident that any other suitable metal may be employed. The outer ends of the bridge B are curved or bent downward, forming lips c 0, thereby serving to keep the bridge more securely in position on the chimney. It will be seen that when the lamp to which the chimney is attached is lighted the heat is attracted by the coil, whereby bursting, breaking, or crack= ing of the chimney is prevented, this being especially the case when the chimney is chilled or cold and the lamp is suddenly lighted, or there is excessive heat.
As glass is a poor conductor of heat, and metal is the reverse, the heat of the lamp is (No model.)
that there is a uniform warming of the chimney, and the heat is also rapidly conducted from the same, the effect of which is to guard the chimney, as has been stated.
I am aware that lamp-chimney protectors have been constructed having a pending portion which is placed within the chimney, and such construction I do not broadly claim, as my device differs therefrom in having a coil instead of a straight or slight curved pending portion, thereby more readily permitting the absorption of the heat generated by the flame,
and having a pointed projection. above the,
bridge, more readily permitting the radiation of the heat into the surrounding atmosphere. The detachable coil permits the slight oscillation thereof due to the current of ascending heated air without moving the bridge part, thereby diminishing the liability of breakage of the glass chimney.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A lamp-chimney guard composed of a coil and a bridge having lips at its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A lamp-chimney guard consisting of a metallic coil having pointed ends, and a bridge to which the said coil is secured, so that aportion thereof extends above the said bridge, while the lower partdepends within the chimney, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a lamp-chimney guard, the bridge B, having the eye I), in combination with the metallic coil 0, having pointed ends, and an eye, a, the upper of said pointed ends, extending above the chimney, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
