HERMAN EEeE sBUEeE E PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AssIeNoE OFONE-HALFTO THEODORE BINDER, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-CHIM N EY PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,170, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed February 5, 1897. Serial No. 622,168. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN REGENSBUR7- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented erence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which ,J igure 1 is a sectional View of a lamp-chimney, showing my attachment in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment.
A is a chimney either adapted to a lamp or gas-burner.
B is a hanger made, preferably, of twisted copper wire. This hanger has hooked ends I) b, so that it may be. hung upon the upper end of the chimney and extend some distance into the chimney. Carried, in the present instance, by a twisted wire (I is a disk D, preferably of copper, which is somewhat less in diameter than the chimney, so as to provide an escape for the products of combustion between the disk and the chimney. The disk is solid, so that the products of combustion must pass to the edge. The disk has notches d, in which rest the side bars I) of the hanger B, preventing the disk from turning and keeping it centrally located in the chimney. By extending the hanger some distance below the diskI am enabled to increase the heat at the upper end of the chimney when the light is extinguished to counteract the heat radiated from the burner-head, so that the chimney will cool slowly and evenly.
By my arrangement the products of combustion as they pass from the flame strike the disk and are directed downward toward the sides of the chimney and escape up through the space between the disk and the chimney. Thus the chimney is more evenly heated throughout than where the solid disk is not used, as the currents of hot air come closer to the chimney than heretofore, and
consequently the chimney is not so liable to be broken by currents of cold air, or when placed upon the lamp when damp.
I have tried a series of experiments with my attachment, showing that I can wash the chimney in cold water and place it immediand the chimney will not crack or break, whereas the same test with the ordinary chimney without my attachment will cause the chimney to crack and in many instances break in a number of pieces.
My attachment also prevents downdrafts when the lamp is exposed to drafts, and I can carry the lamp with safety and without the flame being extinguished, as the disk at the top acts as a protector.
In arranging the disk Within the chimney I preferably arrange it, as shown in Fig. 1, some distance from the upper edge, but in any event it must be below the upper edge,
, ately on a lighted lamp with my attachment so as to direct the products of combustion 1 down before they escape through the annular passage between the disk and the chimney.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a lamp-chimney, of a hanger mounted on the chimney and extending within the same, with a solid disk carried by the hanger within the chimney, said hanger extending a considerable distance below the disk, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the wire frame having two hooks by which it is hung within the chimney, a central wire extending up from the cross-bar of the frame, a disk mounted on said wire, said disk having notches within which the side bars of the frame rest and said disk being less in diameter than the chimney so as to form a passage around its periphery for the escape of the products of combustion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
