JOHN N. -AHRENS, OF `UNION, NEW JERSEY,
sAsH-vLooK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iratent No. 595,511, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed June 9, 1897. Serial No. 639,980. (No model.)
This invention is a sash-fastener by means of which the sashes may be held open a certain degree and prevented from being surreptitiously forced farther open.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the clairndefines the actual scope of the conception.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specilication,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention, showing it in use. tion thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line III III of Fig. 2.
One or two of my sash-locks may be applied to a single window. If two are employed, one is arranged at each side of the sashes. The drawings show fragments of one side of each sash and one sash-lock applied thereto.
The upper sash A and the lower sash B are arranged as usual. The sash A carries at its side bar a ratchet-plate 5, which is rigidly secured thereto. Fixed to the upper side portion of the lower sash B is an angle-plate 6,
on which two slightly-iiexible standards 7 are i cast or fixed, and working in the upper portions of the standards 7 is a thumb-screw S, on which, between the plates 7, swings a pawl 9. By operating the thumb-screw 8 the stand* ards 7 may be moved toward and from each other, so as to clamp the pawl 9 and hold it rigidly in a certain position. Pivoted be. tween the standards 7 at their lower portions is a link l0, which has an angular lower end engaged by a leaf-spring 1l. The spring l1 serves to hold the link l0 securely in the poi sition-shown in the drawings or raised approximately perpendicular alongside of the Fig. 2 isa side elevasashes being opened without disengaging the shoe l2 and the plate 5. If it be desired to vopen the window a slight degree, the shoe 12 is disengaged from the plate 5 and the sashes moved, after which the shoe is rengaged, and it will now be impossible to move the sashes farther io an open position without disengaging the locking parts. The screw 8 may be tightened to hold the pawl 9 firmly engaged with the recess 13 of the link 10, whereupon no shaking or rattling of the sashes will dislodge the pawl. y
Various changes in the form, proportion, and minor detailsof my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I do not consider myself limited to the precise construction herein shown, but believe that I am entitled to all such variations as conie within the terms of my claim.
Having Ythus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a base plate, two yielding standards mounted thereon, a screw passed through the standards, a pawl pivoted on the screw between the standards and capable of being clamped friction-tight between the standards by the action of the screw, a link pivoted between the lower portions of the standards, a leaf-spring held on the baseplate and pressing the link, the link being engaged at its free portions by the pawl, and a shoe carried by the link.
