Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates especially to bolts employed upon doors, shutters, &c., and has for its object the provision of a strong, powerful, self-locking bolt, which will be found to be very effective in operation.

To attain the desired end my invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved bolt. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view at line a; m of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the bolt-case with the bolt proper removed, and Fig. 5 is a like view of the bolt taken out of the case.

Similar numerals of reference, wherever they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

1 is the bolt-case, made of any approved material and having vertical ears, two at each side, cast with the case or secured thereto.

8 are perforations in the ears 2.

4 is the bolt proper, slotted at 5, and 6 is a moving and locking piece pivoted in the slot 5 at 7.

8 is a spring secured to the bolt and engaging at 9 with the piece 6, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The

piece 6 is perforated at 10.

11 is a swinging handpiece pivoted in the ears 2 and arranged to swing to the right or left in moving the bolt, which is connected thereto by means of a pin 12 passing through the perforation l0 and through perforations 13 in the handpiece 11.

15 is the nose-piece.

When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, my improved bolt Will be found very effective. It may be applied in any position and cannot possibly be pushed back when shot. If the bolt is left a long time without use, so as to become rusted, the handpiece provides a powerful lever for forcing it in either direction and such as rust will not resist.

In operation, when the handpiece is in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the bolt is shot and the nose 14 of the catch-piece 6 passes down into the slot in the bolt, the spring holding the parts against accidental movement or any attempt to push the bolt back from the outside. lVhen the bolt is withdrawn, the throwing of the handpiece over to the left, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, permits all the parts to move to the left, the same being locked in position when the handpiece is fully depressed.

Having now fully described myinvention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bolt in which is comprised a case; a bolt proper arranged to slide therein; a moving and catch piece pivoted in a slot in said bolt proper and extending therethrough; a spring engaging with the moving and catch piece, and a handpiece pivoted at the sides of the case and to the moving and catch piece, substantially as shown and described.
