SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,550, dated June 9, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT H. BLAKESLEY, of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in trunk-fasteners, the object being to produce a device of this character which shall combine simplicity and cheapness of construction with durability and efficiency in use.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the combination, with two plates having dowel and socket interlocking devices on their adjacent or meeting edges, of a loop or hasp hinged to one plate and provided with a catch on its free end that engages with a projection on the other plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a trunk-fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the upper and lower plates being separated and the loop elevated. Fig. 3 is a view of the device in central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the modified forms which the invention may assume, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view thereof.
The upper or lid plate, A, and the lower or trunk plate, B, of my improved fastening device are of ordinary construction, and they may be varied in form and design as may be desired. The upper plate is provided with a loop, C,which receives the free swinging loop D, and with two lugs, E, having beveled outer faces and arranged to enter the projection F of the lower plate, and thus center and interlock the two plates when they come together. The lower end of the said projection F is slightly beveled and provided with an aperture, G, which receives the upper end of the catch H, mounted in a sleeve, I, attached to or made integral with the lower crossbar of the loop D. The lower end of the said catch, which is actuated by a spring, J, inclosed within the sleeve, is provided with an outwardly-p'roject- 5o ing extension, K, by means of which it is operated in being withdrawn from the aperture G to release the loop. The inner face of the upper end of the catch is provided with'a bevel, L, which enables the catch to be readily sprung into the aperture G by a slight pressure on the loop.
The modified construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings consists, essentially, of an upper plate, M, a lower plate, N, and a hasp, O, the latter being the equivalent of the loop D. The plate M is provided with a loop,
P, which receives the butt Q of the hasp, and with two guideflanges, R, located on opposite sides of the hasp and arranged to prevent the same from being displaced laterally,while 6 the plate N is provided with a pointed lip, 'S, adapted to enter the space between the said flanges, and thus centers the two plates, and with two projections, T, the lower edges of which are provided with slots U, with which 0 the catch V of the hasp engages, the lower portions of the projection being beveled, as at W,
to facilitate the engagement of the catch with the slots. The lower end of the hasp is provided with a cross-bar, X, theproj ecting edges of which are arranged to engage with the lower edges of the projections T, thus relieving the catch V of all the longitudinal strain. The said catch, which is T-shaped in general contour, is actuated by a spring, ,Y, which encircles its vertical arm, the said spring being inclosed in asleeve, -Z, made integral with or attached to the hasp. The T-arm of the catch registers with and bears upon the inner face of the cross-bar of the hasp, and it is pro- 8 5 vided with an extension, A, by means of which the catch is operated in being disengaged from the slots. Theprojections or dowels E on one plate interlocking with the socket F on the other plate serve to relieve the loop or hasp 0 from any undue lateral or transverse strain, while the springcatch connected to the free end of the loop or hasp serves as a handle to enable the loop to be unfastened and swung forward by one hand, thereby enabling both g 5 fasteners on a trunk to be opened simultaneously.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
