WILIJIAM DEVAUN, OF SOUTHPORT, NORTH CAROLINA.
COMBINATION-WRENCH.
SPECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,289, dated fiecem'ber 14, 1897. Application filed September 1 8 $erial No. 604,787. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, WILLIAM DEVAUN, a citizen of the United States, residing at South port, in the county of Brunswick and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a combinationtool which includes a nut and pipe wrench, screwdriver, and metal shears. The particular parts and construction of my invention will be fully pointed out in the specification following, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my device closed. Fig. 2 is a view of the same open.
This device consists of the two levers A and I3, pivoted near one end at C. The short ends B of these are formed as curved jaws, crossgrooved upon their inner surfaces and adapted to be used as pipe-tongs or as a wrench to grasp a nut. The portion of the long arm of the lever or handles which lies next to the pivot is formed as a pair of sheet-metal shears havin g cutting edges E, which have sliding contact, as a pair of shears. The outer end of one or both of these levers is formed as a screw-driver.
This device is simple and strong in its construction and can be manufactured cheaply and is capable of a wide range of uses. It is useful and substantial and not likely to be broken.
13 y reference to the drawings it will be observed that the cutting portions E are formed with segmental cutting edges, the curvatures of which commence in proximity to the pivotpoint C. By this means should the wire being out be placed too near the pivot the closing of the respective arms or levers A B will force the wire to the proper cutting-point before the cutting operation commences. By this means the cutting always takes place at approximately the same point, the arrangement of said segmental edges being such that this cutting-point is the proper distance from the pivot-point to secure the greatest amount of power in relation to the levers A B. One of said levers B is provided near its outer end with a handle or loop-D, whereby the tool may be held firmly by four fingers and the thumb left free to operate the opposing lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combination-tool, the combination with a pair of pivoted levers having segmental ends provided withlateral corrugations for form; ing a pipe-wrench to one side of their pivot and straight cutting portions having concave cutting edges to the opposite side of their pivot and screw-driver ends, of a pivot-pin connecting said levers, and a handle or loop mounted on the side of one of said levers away from the screw-driver end and adapted to receive the hand whereby one of said levers may be lifted by a portion of the fingers while the remainder are free to operate the opposing lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM DEVAUN. Witnesses:
