COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed January 12, 1914. Serial No. 811,735.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. ScHMrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in combination tools and has for its object an improved construction of pivotally connected members that will serve for a number of diversified purposes; the invention consisting of certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts which I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appendant claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool showing the position assumed by its several elements when opened to grip a pipe, nut or receptacle and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating the relation of parts when the same are closed upon the objects named.
The tool of my invention comprises eight distinct elements, namely, a tack-puller, screw-driver, hammer, stove-lid lifter, panlifter, a device for removing bottle-caps, a pipe-wrench, and a nut-wrench.
Descending to particulars of construction, it will be noted that the tool comprises a handlemember 1 whose free extremity is flattened to form a screw-driver 2 and a cooperating handle-member 3 whose free eX- tremity is bifurcated to form a tack-puller 4, said members being pivotally connected at 5 by means of a pin 6. Member 3 is extended beyond point 5 into a hooked arm 7 whose inner surface is square-cut as at 8 and whose outer surface is prolonged into tines 9 and 10, the former adapted to fit over and the latter adapted to fit under the depending flange of the well-known metal bottlecaps to remove the same.
Pivotally secured to an extension of memher 1 by means of pin 11 is a movable jaw 12 a portion of whose under-surface is square-cut as shown at 13 so as to form, in conjunction with surfaces 8, the nut-wrench hereinbefore mentioned and it will be noted that the remaining portion of the undersurface of jaw 12 is given the formation of a reverse curve so as to afford a cam 14 against which the upper extremity 7 a of arm 7 moves to raise or permit the lowering of said jaw. The upper surface of jaw 12 is provided with a semi-annular recess 15 and is thence upwardly inclined to form a flat surface 16. The extension of member 1 terminates in a flat curved foot 17 constituting a stove-lid lifter and projecting horizontally from said extension intermediate said foot and pin 11 is a stationary lug 18 provided with a semiannular recess 19 adapted to form, in conjunction with part 15, a wrench for small piping.
The eighth element of the tool consists in a boss 20 disposed substantially in the location shown, the same serving to enable one to use the instrument as a hammer.
From the foregoing description read in connection with the appendant drawing, it will be appreciated that I have provided a very simple, durable and efiicient construction of combination tool which may be cheaply manufactured and which embodies in one instrument a number of tools for widely different uses.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. An instrument of the character described comprising pivotally connected handles, a movable pivotally secured to an extension of one thereof, a cam depending from said jaw, a lug projecting above said jaw adapted to afford a bearing surface therefor, an arm prolonged from the other of said handles adapted to engage said cam and a substantially square aperture defined by a portion of said jaw, the handle extension to which said jaw is secured and said arm.
2. An instrument of the character de scribed comprising pivotally connected handles, a movable jaw pivotally secured to an extension of one thereof, a cam depending square aperture defined by a portion of said from said jaw, a lug projecting above said aW, the handle extension to which said Jaw adapted to afford a bearing surface aw is secured and said arm.
therefor, semi-annular recesses disposed in HENRY F. SCHMITT. 5 register, in said jaw and lug anarm. pro; Witnesses;
longedefromathecthen-of?saidhandlesadapt v W; G. LIEsER, 7
ed to engage said cam, and a substantially WV. KEANO SMALL.
