GLOVE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,47 5, dated November 9, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FELIX H. HUNIOKE, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a full, clear,'and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates to gloves or mittens; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

Figure 1 is a plan View of the front part of a glove constructed in accordance with the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back of the glove shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the front edge of the glove. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the front section of the glove shown in Fig. 1 before it ismade up. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the front section of the glove, illustrating a step in the construction of the thumb. Fig. 6 is a plan of a section forming the outer section of the thumb. Fig. 7 is a plan View of the reinforcing-strip which I employ in strengthening the connection between the thumb and the body of the glove or mitten. Fig. 8 is a transverse detail sectional view taken approximately on the lines 8 8 of Figs. 1, 2, and 3. Fig. 9 is a sectional View taken approximately on the line 9 9 of Fig. 1. Fig. 10 is a view of the glove turned inside out to illustrate the construction of the thumb and the use of the reinforcing-strip, parts being broken away to economize space.

In the construction of a glove or mitten in accordancewith the principles of my invention the front or palm section 11 and the back portion 12 are formed integral from a piece of suitable material. In making up the glove the back portion 12 is bent backwardly upon the dotted line 13, and said portion 12 covers the back of the front finger, while the portion 14 covers the front of the front finger. In forming the section 11 a slit 15 is cut from the wrist edge 16 upon the line 13 to a point which will come between the third joint of the front finger and the second joint of the thumb. A slit 17 is out from the edge 16 in a line parallel with the slit 15 and in a position which will come upon the opposite side of the thumb from the slit 15. The inner irregular;

end 18 of the slit 17 is turned toward the inner end of the slit 15, and thus is formed the section 19, which covers the inner side of the thumb. The free end 20 of the section 19 is rounded substantially to a semicircle.

. The section 21, (shown in Fig. 6,) which covers the outer side of the thumb, is cut from suitable material substantially in the form shown. The portion 19 of the section 11 is bent outwardly and forwardly, as shown in Fig. 5, and the section 21 is placed in position, as indicated by the dotted line 22 in Fig. 5. The Wrist edge 23 of the section 21 corresponds to the wrist edge 16 of the section 11. The edge 24 of the section 21 is substantially of the same length as the edge 25, forming the rear side of the slit 15 in the section 11, and the

24 and 25 are stitched together, as shown in Fig. 10. The edge 26 of the section 21 is substantially the same length as the edge 27, formed by the slit 17, and said edges are stitched together. The edge 28 of the section 21 is substantially the same length as the edge 29 of the portion 19,and said edges are stitched together. The edge 30 of the section 21 is stitched to the edge 31 of the portion 19, thus forming the seam 32, which extends from the edge 16 of the'portion 12 along the edge 25 to the inner end of the slit 15, then along the edge 29, then along the edge 31 to the inner end of the slit 17, then back along the edge 27 to the edge 16, as shown in Fig. 10.

Especial attention is called to the fact that so far in the construction of the glove or mitten there is no seam passing between the thumb and forefinger. I now take the reinforcing-strip 33, (shown in Fig. 7,) and apply it as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and as shown by dotted linesin Fig. 10. The reinforcingstrip 33 has the parallel end edges 34 and 35, which are placed in alinement with the edges 16 and 23'. The side edges of the strip 33 are The portion 36, which is approximately in the center of the strip, is the narrowest part of the strip and comes directly between the forefinger and the thumb. The end portion 37 of the strip is slightly Wider than the portion 36, and said end portion comes over the seam formed by the

24 and 25 and upon the side of the forefinger. The end 38 is considerably wider than the end 37 and comes over the seam formed by inner end of the slit 15, across the joined end of the portion 19 to the inner end of the slit 17. The strip 33 is placed upon the outside of the other parts of the glove or mitten and is securely stitched in position, the end edges 34 and 35 being attached to the wristband. The portion 36 of the strip 33 is of especial importance, as it comes directly between the thumb and forefinger and adds strength to the glove or mitten at a point where strength is needed and where it has heretofore been found wanting. The portion 38 is also of considerable importance, as it protects the seam at a point which is subjected to great wear. In addition to protecting the seam from frictional wear the reinforcing-strip also protects the seam from the strain of pulling on the glove or mitten.

I am aware that reinforcing-strips have heretofore been used to protect seams from frictional wear, but I am not aware that a reinforcing-strip has ever before been used in gloves or mittens which passed between the thumb and forefinger and had its end edges secured to the wristband, and I believe such construction to be my invention.

A glove or mitten embodying the principles of my invention as herein set forth may be finished up in any desired style without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim 1. In a glove or mitten, the combination with the palm-section 11, the back portion 12 and the thumb portion19; all formed integral of a single piece of material by cutting the slit 15 from the wrist edge 16 upon the dotted line 13 and the slit 17 parallel with said slit 15, its inner end 18 being turned toward the inner end of the slit 15, and the free end of the section 19 thus formed being rounded; of the thumb-section 21; having its edges stitched to the edge 25of the back portion 12, to the edge 29 of the thumb portion 19, to the edge 31 of the thumb portion 19 and to the edge 27 of the palm-section 11, the wrist edge 23 of said section 21 being in alinement with the wrist edges 16 of the back portion 12 and the palm-section 11; the reinforcing-strip 33 stitched in position to cover the seam between said thumb-section 21 and said palm-section 11 and to cover the seam between said thumb-section 21 and said back portion 12; said reinforcing-strip extending from the wrist edge of said palm-section 11 in front of the thumb and around between the thumb and forefinger and backwardly to the wrist edge of said backportion 12; anda wristband attached to the wrist edges of said palm-section 11, of said thumb-section 21 and of said back portion 12 and to the wrist ends of said reinforcing-strip 33, substantially as specified.

2. In a glove or mitten, the combination with the palm-section 11, the back portion 12 andthe thumb portion 19 all formed intogral of a single piece of material by cutting the slit 15 from the wrist'edge 16 upon the dotted line 13 and the slit 17 parallel with said slit 15, its inner end 18 being turned toward the inner end of the slit 15, and the free end of the section 19 thus formed being rounded; of the thumb-section 21; having its edges stitched to the edge 25 of the'back portion 12, to the edge 29 of the thumb portion 19, to the edge 31 of the thumb portion 19 and to the edge 27 of the palm-section 11, the wrist edge 23 of said section 21 being in alinement with the wrist edges 16 of the back portion 12 and the palm-section 11; the reinforcing-strip 33 stitched in position to cover the seam between said thumb-section 21 and said palm-section 11 and to cover the seam 9 0 between said thumb-section 21 and said back portion 12; said reinforcing-strip extending from the wrist edge of said palm-section 11 in front of the thumb and around between the thumb and forefinger and backwardly to the wrist edge of said back portion 12; and a wristband attached to the wrist edges of said palm-section 11, of said thumbsection 21 and of said back portion 12 and to the wrist ends of said reinforcing-strip 33; [00 said reinforcing-strip 33 consisting of the central portion 36 which comes directly between the forefinger and the thumb, the end portion 37 which is slightly wider than the portion 36 and covers the seam between the section 21 I05 and the front section, which is in the rear of the thumb and in front of the forefinger, and the end 38 which is considerably wider than the end 37 and covers the seam between the section 21 and the palm-section, which is in no front of the thumb, .or substantially in the palm of the hand, substantially as specified.
