JOHN BEERMAKER, OF WAHOO, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES A. LEITER, OF SAME PLACE.
PlPE-WRENC'H.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,008, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed January 19, 1897. Serial No. 619,738. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BEERMAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVahoo, in the county of Saunders and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in a pipe-wrench; and it consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of this pipe-wrench with a pipe held thereby. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the wrench with the jaws extended.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates the handle of the pipe-wrench, which is provided at one end with a hook 2. This handle 1 is provided near its hooked end with the headed projections 3,to which is secured a sliding jaw 4. The said sliding jaw consists,
preferably, of two plates having slotted ends 5, that receive the headed projections 3 and are situated on opposite sides of the handles 1. The said jaws has rearwardly-extending teeth and is provided at its outer end with a pivoted jaw 6, situated between its side plates and provided at its outer end with a hook 7 to engage the hook 2 of the handle 1. This pivoted jaw 6 is provided with rearwardlyextending teeth in the manner shown.
A pipe-wrench of this construction adjusts itself to the pipe to be turned without any attention on the part of the operator by means of the slotted connection between the jaw 4: and handle 1.
In using the wrench the jaws are placed around the pipe or part to be turned with the hooks 2 and 7 interlocking, and then by an outward pressure on the handle 1 the jaws adjust themselves to the pipe to be turned, as will be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A pipe-wrench consisting of a handle provided with projections near one end thereof,
a jaw provided with end slots receiving said projections, a jaw pivoted to said sliding jaw, a device for fastening the ends of said jaw to the end of said handle.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BEERMAKER.
