SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,473, dated October 26, 1897.

To (LZZ whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM MAD- DEN, aeitizen of the United States, residing at \Vellsborough, in the county of 'lioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to trousers; and the object thereof is to prevent bagging at the knees, and the means consist of separate strips of suitable material cutas hereinafter described, and connected with the trouserlegs in such manner that they extend diagonally across the knee portion thereof, said' strips being secured within the leg, as hereinafter described.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a front View of a pair of trousers provided with my improvement, a portion of one leg being broken away over or adjacent to the knee, and the strips which I employ for the purpose specified being shown in dotted and full lines. a

In the drawing forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference.

In said drawing I have shown at A a pair of trousers of the usual form, and in the practice of my invention I provide a plurality of strips B of silesia out on the straight and stitched or otherwise secured diagonally across the knee on the inner side of the leg, one of said strips extending from the hip downwardly across the knee to the inner seam of the leg below the knee, another from the crotch downwardly across the knee to the outer seam below the knee, and a third diagonally across the leg from the outer seam to the inner seam and crossing the other two strips just below their connecting-point, this arrangement of the strips being clearly shown in the drawing. The longer strips prevent a long pull on the bias of the material of which the trouser-leg is composed, and the short strip which extends diagonally across the leg counteracts the short pull across the knee.

The separate strips may be secured in position in any desired manner, and my improvement is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, experience having shown that after long usage of a pair of trousers provided therewith the front of the legs will remain substantially of the form when first made, there being no appreciable bagging at the knee.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a pair of trousers having reinforcing-strips of non-elastic material 011 the inside thereof, one of said strips extending from the hip downwardly across the knee to the inner seam of the leg below the knee, another extending from the crotch downwardly across the knee to the outer scam below the knee, and a third extending diagonally across the leg from the outer seam to the inner seam, and crossing the other two strips just below their connecting-point, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
