UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
NVALTER J. SMART, OF SOUTH ORANGE, NEWF JERSEY.
LOCKING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,425, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed July 21, 1896.
To all whom t may concern: l
Beit known that I, WALTEEJ. SMART, of South Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices, of which the following is a specication.
This invention embraces a device the members of which may be secured together by any ordinary or appropriate form of lock and which, when the members are so secured and properly positioned, is adapted to connect two parts of an article securely with each other.
The invention in the embodiment illustrated is applied to acontrivance for locking a bicycle-wheel, but it is by no means limited to such an application, nor do I wish to be understood as restricting myself to this use, since its employment may be extended to meet other requirements, as will appear.
In the drawings of the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration, Figure l is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top view.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both iigures.
A designates a hasp having a hinged connection with a member or part which it is de-V sired to connect with another. In this instance the member or part consists of a side extension Z) of a wheel-receptacle B.
At its free extremity the hasp A is connected with the remaining member or partin this instance the extension b of the wheel-receptacle B-by a swinging tongue O, adapted to be moved into a position in which it protrudes through an opening in the hasp. When in this position, the tongue is locked from withdrawal by any. ordinary or appropriate lock C', which passes through an opening in the extremity of the tongue.
In the present instance the tongue O is hinged to the extremity of the hasp A, and in the act of using the device is swung from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 into Serial No. 600,080. (No model.)
the position shown in full lines, in which it embraces the rod c on the extension b.
The wheel-receptacle B is attached by screws c or other suitable means in a desired location.
The invention is especially applicable as a means for securing a door or gate in a closed position where there exists a bar or rod with which the tongue O is adapted to engage-as, for instance, the doors of animal-cages, the gatesv of iron fences, &c.
In the use of this locking device there is no necessity for providing a receptacle to receive the bolt of the ordinary lock requiring a more or less elaborate and expensive construction, an ordinary padlock or other lock sufticing to secure the parts together.
Having described my invention, what I consider as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. VIn a loc-hing device, the combination of a hasp extending from one of the members or parts to be connected, and a curved tongue hinged to the free end of the hasp and which is adapted to embrace the remaining member or part and to be turned to a position in which it may be locked to the hasp, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a wheel-receptacle, of a hasp having a hinged connection with a side extension thereof, and a curved tongue hinged to the free end of the hasp and being adapted to embrace a part on the other side extension of the receptacle, and to enter an opening in the hasp where it may be locked, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER SMART. Witnesses:
N. KEMPE, ED. BEESLEY.
