FRANZ KROEDEL AND \VILLIAM WESP, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.'.284,743, dated Septemb'er 11, 1883.
Application filed May 7, 1883. (N0 model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANZ KROEDEL and WILLIAM WEsP, citizens of the United States, residing at Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate- Latches Engaging in Hinge-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to gate-latches which engage with a catch on the hinge-post; and its object is to make a good fastening, even when the posts settle out of their proper position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a gate with latch attached Fig. 2 is a top view of so much as is necessary to show the connection of the latch with the hinge. Fig. 3 shows the catch on the post opposite the hinge-post. Fig. 4 shows a modified latch, adapted to engage with the catch on the hingepost only.
A is the latch, which is pivoted to the gat in any usual manner.
B is a catch on the hinge-post, which may be a part of the hinge or separate therefrom. This catch has a perforation, b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or a projection, b, as shown in Fig. 3, with which the hook a at the end of latch A engages.
The main latch A may be connected by a rod or wire, D, with an auxiliary latch, A, near the bottom of the gate, which latch engages with catch B on the gate-post, near the bottom hinge. The end of the latch opposite the hinge-post at a may engage with a catch, 0, on the post. This catch has a notch on the I thus engaged with both catches B and G the gate is securely barred.
The end a of the latch A may be thrown up by a pivoted hand-piece, 0, pressed up by a to engage with catches on both posts. The latch can be operated from either end of the gate by bearing down upon it at or near a, or lifting up on the hooked end a. When applied with auxiliary latch A, and made toengage with both hinges on the hinge-post and with the other post, a very secure fastening is formed, and the latch has a tendency to keep the posts from settling out of line.
\Vhat we claim is 1. 'The combination, with a notched hinge, of a door or gate pivoted to said hinge, and a latch on the gate adapted, as described, to engage with said hinge and with a catch on the post opposite the hinge-post, substantially as described; I
2. The combination of the posts having hinges provided with catches for the latches, the latches A and A, pivoted to the gate and connected together by a bar or rod, 'D, and adapted to engage with the catches on the hinges, and the catch 0 011 the post opposite the hinge-post, with which the latch A engages, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
FRANZ KBOEDEL. WILLIAM WESP. Witnesses I JOHN BERNHARDT,
