A. ROEDEL. ELECTRIC HERB PAD- No. 588,479. Patented Aug. 17, 1897.
NITE
AUGUSTE ROEDEL, OF'NEIV YORK, N. Y.
.'ELECTRIC HERB PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 588,479, dated August 17, 1897.
Application filed June 19, 1897. Serial No. 641,512. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTE ROEDEL, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric I-Ierb Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to pads for medicinal purposes; and its object is to provide a com bined electric and herb pad wherein the sedative and antispasmodic virtues of wildwood herbs are combined with the tonic properties of an electric current, these elements employed together having been found beneficial in certain diseases.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out I in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is an inner side view of the pad, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same.
In accordance with my invention the pad 1 is constructed of an outer layer or lining 2 of some suitable fabric, an inner layer or lining 3 of canton-flannel or equivalent material, and afilling 4 of powdered medicinal material, preferably wild-wood herbs possessing sedative and antispasmodic qualities.
The pad may be made of any suitable shape or contour to adapt it for application to the parts to be treated, the form of pad shown in the present instance being adapted for application to the chest. For this purpose the pad is provided with a recess or cut-out space 5 at the top to enable it to it closely about the neck and at opposite sides of the said cut-out space with straps or bands 6, by which it may be suspended from theneck of the wearer. The inner and outer layers 2 3 are connected at their edges by thread stitches 7 and are also connected by a series of transversely-extending lines of stitching 8, which form pockets or recesses 8 for the reception of the pulverized herb or medicinal material 4, said pockets serving to retain the said medicinal preparation in proper position and between this layer of flannel and the cantonflannel 3 is a plate 10, of zinc or other metal, and on the exterior side of the flannel layer a second plate 11, of copper or other suitable metal. These plates are provided with perforations or openings 10 11 through which threads 12 are passed to connect them together and with the interior layer of cantonflannel 3 and the other layer of flannel 9. The specific kinds of metal denoted are preferably employed and are adapted by galvanic action to set up an electric current.
The operation is as follows: After the pad is applied the inner layers of flannel become moist from contact withthe skin, duein many instances to an excess flow of perspiration. The metal plates then set up an electric current by galvanic action due to the decomposition of the moisture, and the pulverized medicinal material 4 acts in the usual manner.
By this construction I provide a simple and effective form of pad, which is adapted to combine the advantages of the sedative and antispaslnodic qualities of herbs with the tonic properties of an electric current, which I have found in practice are of great benefit in certain diseases.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'A medicinal pad comprising a bag or receptacle formed of fabric, a filling of medicinal herbs contained therein, and metal plates on the inner side of the pad adapted to set up an electric current by galvanic action when the pad is applied to the part to be treated, substantially as described.
2. A medicinal pad comprisinga bag or receptacle formed of inner and outer layers of fabric connected at the edges thereof and provided with a series of pockets, a filling of pulverized herbs or other suitable medicinal material contained in said pockets, a strip or layer of flannel on the interior side of the pad, metal plates arranged on the interior and exterior sides of the said strip of flannel and suitably connected, said plates being adapted to set up an electric current by galvanic action when the pad is applied to the part to be treated, and means for suspending the pad about the person of the wearer, sub stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AUGUSTE ROEDEL.
Vitnesses:
M. GLERRUP, GUSTAFE M. WEsTMAN.
