UNITED STATES PATENT Curran.

IMPROVEMENT IN PADS FOR EXTERNAL APPLICATION OF MEDICINAL AGENTS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,818, dated January 29, 1878; application filed July 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, E. HARWOOD FLAGG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improved Pad for the External Application of Medicinal Agents, of
which the following is the description:
My invention relates to that class of pads or belts which are used for making external applications of medicinal agents; and my invention consists of a sheet of suitable material provided with cells or other suitable receptacles for receiving powder, paste, or other material to be applied, and constructed for application as may be desired, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a face view, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section, showing one form of pad.
Heretofore, in belts and pads adapted for extern al application, the medicinal. agent generally in the form of a powder) has been quilted or sewed in abag of muslin or other fabric, necessitating considerable manipulation of th e bag after it has been filled, and only imperfectly effecting the desired end. In place of such a bag, I use a sheet or pad, A, of felt, papiermach, or other suitable material, in which I make a series of cells or other receptacles, a,
which may extend wholly or partly through the sheet, as shown in Fig. 2, and in these cells I place, in the form of a paste or powder, the material which constitutes the medicinal agent.
The cellular sheet or pad may be applied directly to the person, but is best inclosed in a thin outer covering. By this construction a large body of material may be held in contact with the person at any desired point, and the necessity of sewing through a fabric case filled with powder or paste is thereby avoided.
As a new article of manufacture, a medicinal pad, A, made of felt or other suitable material, in which the medicinal agent is carried in cells or other suitable receptacles a, formed in the pad, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. HARWOOD FLAGG.
