Description

A. F. COOPER. Medicated Pads or Belts. N0. 144,315. Patented Nov.4,i873,
VEZEZ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALMOND F. COOPER, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDIGATED PADS OR BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,315, dated November 4, 1873; application filed October 2, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALMOND F. COOPER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Medicated Pad or Belt for the Cure of Rheumatism and other kindred complaints, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved medieated pad. Fig. 2 is a section through the same on the line w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a medicated belt made in accordance with my invention. I
This invention has for its object to effect a radical cure of rheumatism and other kindred complaints, such as neuralgia, sciatica, 820. and consists in apad or belt containing a compound of alum and borax pulverized and mixed together, the pad or belt being applied to any desired portion of the body, thealum and borax combined acting as an absorbent to extract the impurities from the blood, and" thus effect a cure.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A, Fig. 1, represents a pad, which is formed of two or more thicknesses of silk or other suitable fabric, which is quilted or stitched so as to form a series of cells or pockets, b, for containing pulverized,
alum and borax, pulverized and mixed together in the proportion of two parts of alum to one part of borax. These proportions may, however, be varied, if desired. 13, Fig. 3, is a belt of similar construction to the pad A, the filling being the same.
I prefer to construct the pad or belt with cells or pockets 1), as the filling is thereby kept evenly distributed and prevented from accumulating at one or more points, as would otherwise be the case. 7
The above-described medicated pad or belt is intended to be held in contact with any desired part of the body by tapes or bands, or may be stitched to any under-garment, so that it will come into direct contact with the skin. I prefer to apply one of my pads between the shoulders, this being the nearest point to the vital organs and nerve-center, and in connection therewith, if desired, one or more pads or belts directly to the portion or portions of the body where the pain is felt.
The fabric of which the pad or belt is composed being porous, the filling finds its way to the surface and comes into direct contact with the skin, acting as an absorbent to extract the impurities from the blood, the filling also serving to neutralize any febrile action of the muscles and nerves, which is the direct cause of the pain which always accompanies rheumatic and other similar attacks, and a cure is thus easily effected in a short time.
Care must be taken not to wet the compound, as this would destroy its medical properties, and consequently, when the pad or belt becomes soiled from use, it may be cleansed by rubbing the surface with a piece of flamiel moistened with ammonia and water in equal parts.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As a new article of manufacture, a porogs pad' or belt containing a compound of alum (Al O ,3SO -I-KO,SO x 24110) and bora-x, (Na- 0,2BO +10HO,) as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 29th day of September, A. 1). 1873.
ALMOND F. COOPER. In presence of- P. E. TESCHEMACHER, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
