W. P. WILSON. l DEVICE FOR DRAINING, DRYING, AND PRESERVING HOSE PIPES.
No. 587,902. Patented Aug. 10,1897.
UNITED STAT-ns WILLIAM P. VILSON, OF TRENTON, NEV JERSEY.
DEVICE FOR DRAINING, DRYING,
AND PRESERVING HOSE-l-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,902, dated August 10, 1897. y
Application filed November 3, 1896.
To u/,ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draining, Drying, and Preserving Hose-Pipes; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for draining, dryin g, and preserving hose-pipes; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character above indicated to which the hose may be attached, drained, and thoroughly dried, and, further, to construct a device which will be simple in its construction and arrangement, readily applied, and easily used.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication and wherein like letters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure l is an elevation of the device, showing a section of hose applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the device.
In the drawings, A represents a pipe, preferably of metal, having a coupling B at its outer end, to which a hose, as B', is attached. The opposite end of the pipe A is screwthreaded and is coupled to the forward end of a branched casting C.
The casting C consists of two branches D D', converging at their forward ends into a common head or section D2, the end of which is coupled to the pipe A. The opposite ends of the pipes D D are provided with couplings E of any desired or well-known form. To these couplings may be attached the hosepipe F.
At the crotch of the pipes D Dis an enlargement or casting H, having' a longitudinal bore therein in line with the axis of the head and pipe. Threaded into the inner end of the bore of the casting H is an injector-tube K, leading forward to a point slightly beyond the end of the head.
Serial No. 610,920. (No model.)
L designates a steam-pipe entering the opposite end of the bore of the casting H, the same being fitted with any suitable or convenient style of valve, as at M. This pipe leads from a boiler, preferably a iireengine boiler, the same bein g connected therewith by any suitable means.
In operation after the hose has been placed on the reel and it is desired to drain the same the end thereof is coupled up to one of the branch pipes and steam turned on, the opposite branch pipe being iitted and closed by any suitable cap or coupling. The steam issuing from the injector will, in a well-known Inanner, create a vacuum and thereby a suction, thus effectually draining the surplus water from the pipes During this operation when it is desired to remove the water from two sections of pipe another section can be attached to the opposite leg or branch.
To dry the pipes, the process of drawing the air therethrough materially aids, but I have found that by injecting a stream of live steam through the pipe A and then through the section of hose which may be coupled thereto the steam will heat and dry the pipes through which it passes.
The operation, as above stated, may with great success be reversedthat is to say, the Water can be driven out by the force of the steam, and the passage of air through the hose at the opposite end will have a tendency to rapidly dry the same. By this means the hose are prevented from rotting or deterioating.
lVhile I have shown the preferred form of the device, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the form shown and de-v scribed, as it is evident that minor changes can be made therein.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A device of the character described consistin g of a main pipe, a heading coupled therewith, diverging branch pipes leading from the heading, an injector located centrally in the heading and projecting forward in line with the center of the main pipe, a steam-supply pipe for the injector, and detachable couplings at the ends of the pipe, substantially as described.
2. A device of the character described con- IOO sisting of a main pipe, a branch pipe leading I thereto, an injector projecting into the main pipe beyond the mouth of the branch pipe, a
- valve steam-supply pipe for the injector, and
hose-couplings for the main and branch pipes, substantially as described.
3. In a device for drying hose or pipes, the combination Witha hollow member having an injector leading thereinto, of a hose-coupling on the hollow inernberin advance of the in- 1o jector.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM P. WILSON.
