IMFRQVEMENT IN STEAM-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,590,
Be it known that I, WM. ARTHUR, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and in ythe State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Bump;
a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and-arrangement of a steampump, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. Y
In order to enable others skilled in the art use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section, showing a horizontal pump. Fig. 2 is a sim- Fig.3 shows a modification of the horizontal pump; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are attachments to be used in my pump.

This pipe may be screwed into the rear end of the head or cast in it, as most convenient. On the under l side of the head A is an opening for the pipe l l) to be screwed into the head. On the front end of the pipe B is screwed a larger pipe, B', as shown in Fig. 1. A suitable steam-pipe connects the steam-jet pipe C with the boiler or any other suitable place where steam can be taken from. This steam-pipe must have a valve, a, to regulate the amount of steam and to stop and start it. In a perpendicular pump, as shown in Fig. 2, the head A' is pipeshaped. On the side of the head is an opening for a steam-jet pipe, C, to enter in the side of the head; or this pipe may be cast in the head, as may be convenient. The end of the head A', toward the water, is much larger than the upper end at the throat B, the throat having an unvarying diameter, and discharging into a larger pipe, B. Steam-pipe and valve are proylded the same as in the perpendicular pump.
In pumping water through hose with steam the water it often becomes acting direct on heated.
To prevent the heating of the water dated August 27, 1872.
Iuse a cooler, E, of cylindrical, square, or other suitable shape, and pass the pump-pipe B' through water inside of the same. The cooler E may be attached to the bottom of a boat-that is, in the hold of the boat-or to the side on the inside, and must be placed below the surface of the water outside of the boat. 'The cooler E is connected, by hollow legs G G, with the bottom of the boat, holes being made in the same 'for the water to pass through said legs into the cooler. The pump, whether horizontal or perpendicular, is attached in like manner to the bottom of the boat.
To put the pump in operation, turn the valve a so that the steam will enter at the pipe O. The steam then forces the water through the pipe or throat B into the pipe B', and thence hose at pleasure.
H, I, and J are attachments to be used for the purpose of reducing the opening in the throat B, and by the reduction of said opening it will throw with a less amount of steam, but will not throw as large an amount of water as when the opening is larger. l
In Fig. 3 I have represented a pump and cooler that may be placed in any position required, and has only one opening to the water through the hull of the boat.
By placing valves in the legs G G the water can be shut off to drain the cooler in cold weather.
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 1. The arrangement, with the head of a steam-pump, of the discharge-pipes B B' and steam-jet pipe C, the pipe B passing centrally across the head to the steam-jet pipe, substantilly as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The cooler E, provided with hollow legs G Gand surrounding the discharge-pipe B', substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. f
