Description

F. c. EDWARDS. GuV'Y-off Nozzles for Drawing Liquors. N0. 142,383.l PatentedSeptember2,873.
Qa/MW. 5' 541W@ NITnD STATES PATENT Orrrcn FRANCIS C. EDWARDS, OF CHICAGO, ILLIN IMPROVEMENT IN CUT-OFF NOZZLES FOR DRAWING LIQUKORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,383, dated September 2, 1873; application led l June 30, 1873.
- pump and those parts of my device which may be operated in immediate connection therewith, such connection being shown; and Fig. 2, a vertical central section through a` barrel, and through those parts of my device which `may be employed in immediate connection therewith, such connection being also shown.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to make a cutoff nozzle whereby various liquors may be conveniently drawn, as ordered, from their respective barrels or casks, to or nearly to the same place on a counter or other convenient place in a store or other place where liquors are sold in comparatively small quantities. I
also aim to so construct the nozzle that those parts of it which are immediately connected to the barrel may be used for the purpose of drawing of liquor at the barrel, and without being connected to those parts which are immediately connected to the pump, and so that the pump need not` be employed for the purpose of drawing effervescent liquors from various barrels to the counter promiscuously. For the purpose of accomplishing the objects above set forth my invention consists in certain novel features, hereinafter fully described and particularly vset forth, relating to the various parts of the cut-oft' device or nozzle 5 and also in the arrangement of its various parts, substantially as herein specified.
In the drawing, A represents a barrel or cask. B is that part of the nozzle which enters the barrel; and its inner end is provided with a screw-thread, so that it may be readily screwed into a hole of suitable size in the head of the barrel. That part of the part B which is external to the barrel is larger than the remaining part, so thata firm and tight joint willbe made by the contact with the head of the barrel of the shoulder thus formed. C is a shut-off in the part B. D is a coupling run upon the outer end of the part B. E is a faucet in the outer end of the part D. a is a collar, rigidly attached to the inner end of the faucet E after the latter is inserted into the coupler, and a is a washer or packing arranged between the collar and the coupler. The coupler is run upon the nozzle B until the latter crowds the collar against the packing, thus making a tight joint, and admitting of the faucet being turned in the coupler. F is a bent pipe in the inner end of the part B, and extending nearly to the sides of the barrel, as shown.
It will now be perceived that the contents of the barrel may be drawn off through the faucet E in the usual manner. When the barrel contains effervescent liquor, and when a pump is employed in the manner hereinafter described, all or nearly all the contents of the barrel may be drawn away, owing to the form and arrangement of the pipe F. In shipping andstoring the barrels the faucet and coupling may be removed.
G is a pump. H is a tube, to which the pump is attached. I I are tubular branches communicating with the tube H. J J are shutoffs in the branches I I. K K are pipes set upon the branches I I, as shown. The pipes K K may each be inserted either into a corresponding part, B, provided with a pipe, F, and arranged in a corresponding barrel or cask, or attached to the nozzle of the faucet E.
It will now be obvious that the contents of different barrels or casks may be readily drawn 1. The bent pipe F, in combination with the nozzle B, constructed substantially as described, and provided with a. shut-off, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the bent pipe F, nozzle B, constructed substantially as described, and provided with a. shutoff, the coupler D, and faucet E, all substantiaily os specified, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination, the bent pipe F, nozzle B provided with a. shut-off, coupler D', tube H provided with a nozzle, branches I I, each provided with a shut-off, and the pipes K K, all
arranged substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
4. In combination, the bent pipe F, nozzle B provided with a shut-0d', coupler D, pump Gr, branched tube H provided with stop-cocks, and with the pipes K K, all arranged substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
