Description
J. F. GATES.
(No Model() HOLDER.
No. 587,724. Patented Aug. 10, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB F. GATES, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.l
HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpar; of Letters Patent No. 587,724, dated August 10, 1897.
Application tiled April 16, 1897.
To all whom t may concer-lt:
Beit known that I, JACOB F. GATES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in holders, and may be more particularly designated as a curlingiron holder, and is adapted to be attached to the top of a lamp-chimney, gas-jet globe, or the like, and receive the curling-irons while the same are being heated; and the invention aims to provide a holder of this class that will byits peculiar construction and arrangement hold the irons at the proper angle to heat the same in the portion desired and at the same time el'ectually prevent the heat of the flame from coming in contact with the handle of the irons, thus keeping the same cool at all times; and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed outin the claims, and in describing the invention in detail reference is had to the ac-Y companying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved curling-iron heater. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, showing it applied to an ordinary lamp-chimney, which is shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the application to a gas-jet globe. Y
To put my invention into practice, I form the holder a, which receives the curlingirons, and consisting of a tube, together with a shield h and the rear clamp c, of one piece of metal or other suitable material, the tube or holder being formed after the stamp has cut the sheet to the proper form. The rear holder c is formed by leaving intact with the shield b a strip d, having its end bent to form the clamp or holder c, which engages the lamp chimney or globe and supports the holder at the rear end, the front end of said Serial No. 632,411. (No model.)
`tube or holder being closed, and attached to this front or forward end is a rod e, which is bent V shape in form and swiveled in a keeper fon the holder or tube, the free ends of said rod haring hook ends g g, which engage over the edge of the globe or chimney, and thus form a hanger to support the forward end of the holder. the edge that is in close proximity to the holder with a flange h', which serves to defiect the heat and prevent same coming in contact with the handle. This hanger being longer than the support at the rear of the holder permits the forward end of the holder to incline downward toward the flame, and thus bring the forward end of the curling-irons into close proximity therewith, and by the arrangement of the shield the heat from the flame is prevented from coming into contact with the curling-iron handles, so that the same are retained cool and easily handled at all times.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the manner of forming the holder and the shield of one piece of metal or other suit-able material, as this will of course depend somewhat upon the kind of material of which the holders may be manufactured, yet I have found this the cheapest and simplest modeA 'of forming the same, and it will of course be further understood that the hangers may be made of any form desired to snit any particular globe or chimney and that other changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a holder of the class described, consisting of a tube, a clamp or holder, said tube and clamp or holder formed of a single piece of metal or other suitable material, a pivoted hanger secured to the tube, and adapted to engage the chimney or globe diametrically opposite to the clamp or holder,whereby said holder may be applied to chimneys or globes of dierent sizes, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a holder of the type described, a tube and shield, a clamp or holder for supporting the tube and shield at the rear, and a hanger The shield b is provided aroundl IOO 4. A holder of the type described, consist# ing of a tube, a. shield and et holder formed of a single piece 0f metal or other suitable materiel, and zt hanger attached to the tube for supporting the one end of the same, sub- 15 stantially as shown and described.
In testimonywhereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. v
