S'PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,785, dated November 14, 1899 Application filed February 8, 1899. Serial No. 705,003. (No model.)

, My invention has for its object to provide an improved holder or shield adapted for application to the upper end of a lamp-chimney to support a pair of curling-tongs or similar form of curling-iron in position to be heated by the flame from the lamp.
To this end my invention consists of the novel devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The device in its preferred form is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with some parts broken away, showing a lamp with one of my improved holders or shields applied to the upper portion of the lamp-chimney and a pair of ordinary curling-tongs supported in position for heating by the said holder. Fig. 2 shows the curling-tongs in side elevation and the support or holder in transverse vertical section, said parts being removed from the lamp, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder, and Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the disk-like blank from which the holder is formed.
The numeral 1 indicates an ordinary lamp provided with an ordinary lam p-chimney, (indicated by the numeral 2.)
The numeral 3 indicates a pair of ordinary curling-ton gs.
The numeral 4 indicates a disk-like blank of thin metal, which is provided at its center With a perforation or hole 5 and from which the holder or shield is formed.
.When formed from the blank 5, the holder or shield has a plurality of inwardly-bulged sides 4*, as shown-four in number-and I these inwardly-bulged sides 4* form a corresponding number of radial grooves or depressions 4 When the holder isthus formed from the blank 4:, it is, as has already been indicated, corrugated or fluted, and it will be noted by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 that the central perforation 5.
The holder is applied in working position to a lamp-chimney, as shown in Fig. 1, with its depending central and perforated portion located centrally of the chimney. When thus positioned, the corrugations 4Q engage the upper flange of the chimney and ample air-passages for the products of combustion are afforded between the chimney and the inwardly bulged portions 4 of the said holder.
The prongs of the curling-tongs are supported in position for heating by the flame of the lamp by passing them through the perforation or hole 5 at the center of the holder, and they are thus supported directly in the flame of the lamp, and as the draft or ventilation of the lamp is not obstructed by the holder the lamp Will not smoke, and hence the prongs of the curling-tongs will be left clean and unsmoked in the act of heating them. Furthermore, the upwardly-moving hot draft or blast from the lamp is so directed that it cannot possibly heat or burn the upper handle portions of the curling-tongs.
The holder or shield may be very readily removed, even when heated, simply by press ing the handles of the tongs slightly together and spreading their curling-jaws, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
The above-described holder or shield, while exceedingly eflicien-t for the purposes had in view, is of extremely small cost. To sum up, briefly, the advantages of my improved holder may be stated as follows: The holder is made to serve as a shield to prevent burning of the handles of the curling-tongs and to prevent burning of the hands in the manipulation of the curling-tongs. The curling jaws or irons of the tongs are directly exposed to the clear heat from the lamp. The lamp is not caused to smoke by the application of the holder, and the holder itself may be readily removed from the chimney while hot by means of the tongs.
The expressions lamp and lamp-chim ney are used as illustrative throughout this specification and the claims and are not intended as limiting the improved holder to applications to ordinary lamp-chimneys. On the contrary, it is understood that the device I Walls of the same are flared upward from the i may be used Wherever it may be found serviceable and efficient.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
1'. A holder for heating curling tongs or irons in a lamp-chimney, in the form of a corrugated shield provided with a central perforation, substantially as described.
2. A holder for heating curling tongs or irons in a 1aInp-chin1ney,in the form of a radially-corrugated shield, having a central perforation and flaring sides, substantially as described.
3. A holder for heating curling tongs or irons in a lamp-chimney, consisting of the shield formed from the perforated blank 4, 5, and provided with the inwardly-bulged sides t and intervening radial grooves or channels 4 substantially as described.
