NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HELEN A. s. RREN, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
HOLDER FOR CURLlNG-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,822, dated June 11, 1895. Application filed Augu t 21,1894. Serial NO. 520,901. on model.)
' holder for hair curling tongs by which the tongs may be quickly and conveniently heated without being smoked or blackened by the flame, and to this end it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved holder supported from the top of an ordinary lampchimney, the sectionline being indicated by the figures l 1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing a modification; and Fig. 4: is a vertical section thereof on the line 4; 4, Fig. 3.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts in-all the views.
The tube A in which the tongs B are supported over the flameO of the lamp or burner, is preferably made of thin brass and is closed at the lower end. The tube A-is supported by the collar or ring D which (Figs. 1 and 2) is provided with the radial arms d and hook d which engage with the top of the chimney E. The arms 01 are preferably corrugated and said corrugations, with the hook d serve to maintain the holder firmly in position and prevent it from slipping when the tongs are inserted in or removed from the holder. The tube A is by preference removably secured in the collarD so that the device may be con veniently packed for shipment or sale. This may be accomplished by flaring the upper end of the tube so as to fit the collarD tightly, slight pressure being required to remove and insert it. t
In Figs. 1 and 2 the collar D is arranged at one side of the chimney so as to support the tube A at aninclination to the axis of the chimney. I prefer this construction because whenthe tube is inclined as shown the tongs will heat more quickly, and the handles will be out of range of the flame and will not become overheated; but in Fig. 3 Ishow a modification in which the collar D supports the tube A in a vertical. position centrally in the chimney.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the metal d (shown in dotted lines Fig. 3) intermediate the arms 01' is not cut away (as in Fig. 3) but is bent up so that these sections of the disk form a cup shaped heat shield for the handle of the tongs, the arms (1 being inclined downwardly so as to furnish. sufficient draft space for the flame.
The holder while hot may be readily removed from the chimney by simply opening the tongs against the sides of the tube and then lifting the tube and collar bodily out of place. i
It will be observed that my improved holder is simple and inexpensive and that by the use thereof theton gs may be perfectly heated in the flame of an ordinary kerosene lamp. Furthermore as the tube A is closed at the bottom no soot will be deposited on the tongs.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Asa new article of manufacture a holder for curling tongs consisting of the tube A, closed at its lower end, and the collar D in which the tube is secured, said collar being provided with the projecting hook at and with the arms 61 which are of greater length than the said hook and which are angled so as to support the tube at one side of the chimney at an inclination to the longitudinal axis thereof, substantially as shownfand described.
2. In a holder for curling tongs, the tube A closed at its lower end, in combination with a collar having downwardly inclined sections arranged to rest on the top of the chimney, and upwardly inclined sections arranged to form a shield for the tongs handle, substantially as shown and described.
