NITED STATES PATENT CFFICE.
HENRY KELLY, OF LENNOXVILLE, CANADA.
FOOT-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,485, dated August 3, 1897.
. Application tiled March 15, 1897. Serial No. 627,740. (No model.) Patented in Canada February 9,1897, No. 54,928.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KELLY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at LennoXville, in the county of Sherbrooke, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inlFoot- Guards, (for which I have obtained Canadian Patent No. 54,928, dated February 9, 1897;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to foot-guards; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side View of the foot-guard. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A is a plate which lits under the sole of the shoe. This plate has an upwardly-bent rear portion a', which follows the line of the bottom of the shoe.
B is a concavo-convex upper plate which lits over the toe of the shoe and partially covers the instep. The plate B is secured to the plate A at its edges by angle-pieces b or in any other approved manner.
The upper plate B is preferably formed of steel or other hard and smooth metal. The. lower plate A is of any approved material and may be of india-rubber. The bottom of the plate A, when of metal, is roughened, and when of india-rubber it is corru gated, to prevent it from slipping.
The upper plate B is provided with slots b' at its rear part for the insertion of straps for securing the foot-guard in position.
C is a loop on the under side of the rear portion a of the bottom plate. This loop may be struck up from the plate by a punch, or it may be made separate and secured to the plate. A strap is passed through the loop C and assists in securing the foot-guard in position. The straps are not shown in the drawings, as any approved straps may be used.
The foot-guard is used by lumbermen and all persons having occasion to chop wood. It is made to suit either foot and is slipped over the shoe. The roughened under side of the bottom plate prevents it from slipping off the log when the foot is placed on the log to steady it, and the steel upper plate prevents the ax from injuring the foot when a blow intended for the log accidentally falls upon the foot.
What I claim is- I A foot-guard comprising a liat bottom plate provided with an upwardly-curved rear portion, a loop on the under side of the said rear portion, and a concavo-couvex plate secured to the said bottom plate and provided with slots at its rear end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY KELLY.
