IMPROVEMENT IN QUARTER-BOOTS FOR HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,166, dated April 18, 1876; application filed July 18, 1874.
A B are the two pieces which constitute the boot, and for fastening it on at the top I attach the upper straps O D, and to prevent chafing the foot above the hoof I arrange a pad, E, under the strap at the front, connecting it by the loops F. But for fastening the boot at the lower part I connect the strap G to the inside by the loops H and I, said loops being so arranged that the one, I, at the back of the foot holds said strap sufficiently above the lower edge, while the side loops H hold it at or about the lower edge of the boot, and
thus confine said strap in the right position for compressing the foot to guard against bursting or splitting at the quarters of the heel when the animal is exerting great force in running, and at the front I arrange said J boot to the strap G by these loops the lower part of the boot is comparatively loose upon the foot, so that any sand or grit of any kind that may Work in at the top between the boot and the ankle will be free to fall out and escape at the bottom, so that the animal will not be annoyed or injured by it. The boot extends sufliciently low to prevent the shoe from being forced off by the toe of the hind shoe striking it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentv The combination, with a boot A B and its fastening-straps, of the compressing-strap G and loops H I J, as and for the purpose specified.
