Description

(Na Model.)
J. THOMAS & B. BE-TZER.
DBTAGHABLE HORSESHO E.
Patented Nov. 27
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
JOSEPH THOMAS AND BYRON BETZER, OF KINGSTON, OHIO.
DETACHABLE HORSESHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,177, dated November 27, 1883;
Application filed April 25, 1E83. (No model.)
To (all whom, it ma y CON/(342777:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH THOMAS and BYRON BETZER, bot-h citizens of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Ross and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to those horseshoes which are readily applied to or detached from the horses hoof without the use of nails; and it consists, particularly,in so constructing the shoe as to render it at the same time strong and readily detachable and incapable of cramp ing the hoof of the horse. To this end we form on or firmly attach to the Ushaped bar forming the shoe proper two metallic straps adapted to snugly receive the toe of the hoof. To the rear of the shoe proper we hinge a metallic plate, which is connected by buckled straps to t-helooped strap encircling the pastel-n, for the purpose of retaining the shoe in place.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawing, which represents in perspective view our improved detachable horseshoe.
To the U-shaped bar 1, forming the horseshoe proper, we firmly fix a toe-frame, consisting of semicircular bar or plate 2 and central short brace. 3, preferably formed in one piece, as here shown. For the purpose of supporting the heel of the shoe we hinge thereto, ate 4,
a plate, 5, which is provided at its upper end with suitable means of attachment to strap 6. Plate 5 is lined on the inside with a pad or cushion of rubber, 9. Strap 6 in the rear and strap 7 in front, attached, respectively,to plate 5 and bar 2, are both sewed, riveted, or otherwise connected to strap 8, which is adapted to encircle the pastern of the horse, and thus retain the shoe in position. v
Buckles 2 5 8 in the respective straps 2 5 8 provide requisite means of adjustment of the shoe to the size of hoof of the horse, as well as its application to or removal therefrom.
It will be seen that the arrangement of fixed toe-frame and hinged heel-plate forms a shoe which, while perfectly strong and easily detachable, will allow free expansion of the horses hoofa desideratum which is becoming daily more recognized as a necessity.
Having thus described our invention, the following is what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In combination with the shoe and toe-frame, arrangedsubstantially as described, the hinged metallic heel plate, with straps connecting both toe and heel plates to the pasterlrstrap, substantially as set forth.
