HOBSESHOE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK IV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Strafford and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention provides a yieldable heel for horseshoes, which may be quickly placed in position and attached to the shoe or removed therefrom as occasion may require, the device being in the nature of a removable heel attachment for relieving jar and to protect the quarters and frog.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a detail View of a horseshoe as seen from the tread side provided with a yieldable heel attachment embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, as seen from the upper side of the horseshoe. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line w00 of Fig. 2. Fig. i is a detail perspective view of the heel attachment, a portion being broken away to show the reinforcing plate folded therein.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and inclicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

The horseshoe indicated is-of the bar type, that is the heel ends of the shoe are connected by means of a cross bar 1. The heel attachment is fitted to the cross bar 1 upon the under or tread side of the shoe and is secured thereto by means of machine screws 2-, which are threaded into openings formed in the cross bar 1. The heads of the screws 2 enter enlarged openings formed in the heel attachment and engage a metal plate 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

molded in the heel attachment. The metal plate 3 serves to reinforce and strengthen the heel attachment and is provided with openings through which the rubber passes so as to bind both parts of the attachment upon opposite sides of the plate. The heel attachment has a tongue 4 which is located at a central point so as to engage the rear end portion of the frog and protect the same. The attachment when in position relieves all jar and prevents lamination and at the same time protects the frog and quarters of the foot from injury.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
