SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,460, dated August 3, 1897.

Application filed November 16, 1896. Serial No. 612,266. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CATHARINE MINERVA SPEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Gibson, in the county of Claiborne and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sunshades; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to sunshades adapted for attachment to the body of a person; and its object is to provide an improved device to protect the wearer from the suns rays and which will not interfere with. his ordinary occupations.

This invention consists of the improved features of construction hereinafter fully described.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of the device in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device folded, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device with the cover removed.

In the drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

A belt 1 is preferably made of stiff leather or thick cloth firmly stitched to flat stays and is provided with a buckle 2 or other similar attachment to secure the belt firmly around the waist. To the belt 1 are firmly attached standards 3, extending from the front and rear portions of the belt at approximately right angles thereto. The outer ends 4 of these standards are bent upward. A plurality of ribs 5, immovably attached at each end-to the ends 4 of the standards 3, pass over the head of the wearer. These ribs are preferably two in number and flare outwardly from each other, that theymay not pass directlyin front of the wearers face. at each end at points 7 on the long rib and are adapted to open out therefrom, being provided with a brace or stay 8 to limit their outward motion. Afiexible cover 9 extends over the ribs, being firmly attached thereto.

In use my device is belted around the waist and the ribs fall open by gravity. The shade Short ribs 6 are pivoted is thus spread over the head, forming an effi- 5o cient means to protect the wearer from the suns rays while permitting the use of both hands.

It is apparent that by this construction a means is afforded whereby a bicycle-rider equipped with mysunshade may lean forward without striking the face or body against the front bar of the shade. It is a well-known fact that in bending the body forward the spine is curved above the waist, and consequently the upper part of the body projected in front of its normal position with reference to the waist. In the old devices heretofore used the standard was held so close to the body that it was impossible to accomplish this object. 1

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bicycle-sunshade, a belt adapted to fit the waist of the wearer, supports extending outward radially therefrom and in the plane of the belt to the front and rear thereof, upwardly-bent portions upon said supports, and a canopy-top held thereon.

2. In a bicyclesunshade, a belt adapted to fit the waist of the wearer, supports extending outward radially therefrom and in the plane of the belt to the front and rear thereof, whereby supports extending upward therefrom may be held clear of the body, upwardly- 'bent portions upon said supports having a forked upper end'whereby the line of vision in front of the wearer is kept clear, said upright supports being extended over and diverging outward from the wearer, a pair of ribs running longitudinally of said supports and adapted to fall down by the force of gravity when said device is worn, and fabric connecting these ribs, substantially as and for the purposes described.
