UNiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES IV. VALENTINE, OF LAFAYETTE, INDIANA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ZPatent No. 586,734, dated July 20, 189?.
Application filed March 11, 1896. Serial No. 582,753. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES XV. VALEN- TINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lafayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to pipes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class in which the mouthpiece is provided with a supplemental chamber or passage which is in communication with the main passage or central bore of the stem and also with the main passage or central bore of the mouthpiece, said supplemental chamber or passage being adapted to receive saliva, nicotine, and other substances and being adapted to be emptied or cleansed when the mouthpiece is removed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central vertical section of a pipe and the stem thereof provided with myimprovement.
In the practice of my invention I provide a pipe comprising a bowl A and a stem 13 to which is secured a mouthpiece C, said stem and said mouthpiece being connected by a tube D, which is screw-threaded at each end.
The central bore of the stem B is in communication with the central bore of the tube D and also with the central bore E of the stem 0, and the said central bore E of the stem 0 is in communication at its inner end with a supplemental bore or chamber G,which extends backwardly to the stem end of the mouthpiece and is open at said end except when the mouthpiece is screwed in place, when an air-tight joint is formed against the end of the stem 13, effectually closing the passage and making it impossible to draw the moisture up out of chamber G, into which it collects, and formed in the outer end of the mouthpiece is a central bore or passage H, which is in communication with the central bore or passage E and the bore or passage G.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof. In the process of using the pipe the saliva from the mouth, which enters the stem or mouthpiece, will flow down in the supplemental passage or chamber G, and the nicotine or other substance which may pass through the stem from the bowl of the pipe will also flow into said supplemental chamber or passage, this chamber or passage being arranged at a downward inclination, as clearly shown in the drawing, and Whenever necessary or desirable the mouthpiece may be detached from the stem or the tube D and said supplemental chamber or passage be thoroughly cleansed or cleaned in any desired manner.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture a pipe consisting of a bowl and stem in connection therewith, a mouthpiece engaging said stem, a tube connecting said stem and mouthpiece, and being provided with a screw-thread on both ends of the same, said stem being provided with a central bore, said tube also being provided with a central bore and likewise said stem, said bores beingin communication, said stem being provided with a supplemental chamber in communication with said main bore and extending backwardly to the stem end of the mouthpiece, all of said parts being combined substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7 th day of March, 1896.
