Description

(N0 Model.)
J. H. WHITE. LAMP BURNER HINGE.
No. 586,346. Patented July 13, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES H. IVHITE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE MANHATTAN BRASS COMPANY, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
LAM P-BURNER HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,346, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed May 14,1897. Serial No. 636,514. No model.)
To It whom it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, Janus H. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lamp-Burner Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved hinge for connecting the wick-raiser base of the lamp-burner to the chimney-holding top, a part of said hinge acting as a stop against the base when the chimney-holding top is thrown over to light the wick.
In carrying out my invention the hinge comprises two portions, the one a plate of metal bent double about centrally and each part curved to form an eye and the ends bent over to connect said portion to the chimneyholding top. The other portion of the hinge comprises an elongated wire ring, a part of which passes through the eye of the other portion of the hinge and then through the rim of the wick-raiser base, to which the same is soldered. The portion forming the stop-plate depends from the eye.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is avertical section of the lamp-burner closed and with the chimney-holding top turned back in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section in larger size, and
Fig. an inverted plan of the lamp-burner hinge and adjacent parts of the burner.
The wick-raiser base is represented at a and the chimney-holding top at 6. These parts are of usual and well-known construction, and the special form thereof bears no necessary relation to the hinge.
The hinge comprises two portions. The portion 0 is a plate of metal bent double, so that two parallel portions form the stop-plate o 2, above which the plates are bent circular to form the eye 3. The free ends above the eye come together closely and pass through the plate of the chimney-holding top and are turned over above said plate to hold the plate tightly between said turned-over ends and the eye 3, along which line, at 5, solder is used to more firmly connect the parts. The other portion of the hinge comprises the elongated wire ring cl, passing through the eye 3 of the part 0, through holes in the rim of the wick- 5o raiser base, and along the inner edge thereof, Where solder is applied to securely hold the part d to the wick-raiser base.
In making the parts the elongated wire ring is made of U form, and the stop-plate 2 and eye 3 of the part c, which are also formed, then receive in the eye 3 the middle part of the U- shaped wire or ring. The free ends of the wire ring are then passed through the holes in the rim of the wick-raiser base and bent (0 over against said rim and soldered to place. Then the free ends of the metal plate are brought together, passed through the plate of the chimney-holding top, turned over, and soldered in place.
The part of the elongated wire ring d passing through the eye 3 of the part c is necessarily straight to form a proper hinge-joint, and the stop-plate 2, depending from the eye 3 as an integral part thereof, would not fully perform its functions if maintained parallel with the eye 3, because the rim of the wickraiser base is circular, and to form an effective stop 'against said rim the stop-plate 2 is bent and made parallel with the circular rim or the wick-raiser base, so that when the chimney-holding top is swung over and said plate 2 brought against the rim of the base a an even bearing is provided for. I
My improved lamp-burner hinge is simple in construction, inexpensive to make, and efficient in use.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the wick-raiser base and chimney-holding top, of the elongated wire ring d connected to the wick-raiser base, the plate cof metal bent double to form a stop-plate 2, the eye 3 for the wire ring, the same being passed through the plate of the chimneyholding top with the free ends bent over to secure the same in place, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the wick-raiser base and chimney-holding top, of the elongated wire ring (1 connected to the wick-raiser base, the plate cof metal bent double to form when the chimney-holding top is raised, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 11th day of May, 1897.
JAMES H. \VHITE.
