IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 202,580, dated April 16, 1878; application filed February 18, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL B. PERKINS, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, longitudinal section, enlarged; Figs. 2 and 3, detached parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in lamp-burners, and particularly to that class in which the chimney-rest and deflector are hinged to the body of the burner, so that, without removal of the chimney, the wick may be exposed for trimming or lighting; and the invention consists in the method of forming the hinge, as more fully hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
A is the base of the burner, extending 11p and expanding into the body B, which is per forated in the usual manner C, the wick-tube; D, the wick-adjuster; E. the deflector; F, the chimney-holder, all of substantially usual form.
To construct the hinge, a lip, a, projects from one side of the body, and is turned down nearly at right angles thereto, and at each end of this lip one part, (I, of the knuckle is formed by striking it upward in tubular shape, as seen in Fig. 2, leaving a space between the said two parts. The chimney-rest has acorrespondlng knuckle, 0, formed on its under side by striking down from above, as seen in Fig. 3. This knuckle e fitting between the two parts (I (l on the body, and the two being set together,
the wire pintle f is passed through between the knuckles d from below and through the part 6, thus completing the hinge. The lip to forms a rest or stop to support the chimney and deflector when turned away, as seen in broken lines, Fig. 1.
This construction makes the hinge complete without solder, and possessing all the advantages of a pintle-hinge, in which the pintle is entirely inclosed by bending the metal of the hinged plates around it, and at very much less cost than the independent hinge attached to the respective parts.
I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming a hinged burner in which the parts of the hinge are made respectively from the body and chinmey-holder, as such, I am aware, is not new; but in such construction the joints have been made by forming tongues on the respective parts and bending those tongues around the pintle, in which case the ends so bent around must either be soldered, or the metal must be strong enough to resist the strain upon the hinge tending to open the joint, this invention differing from such previous construction essentially in the fact that the knuckles or parts of the joint are formed by striking the metal so as to make loops on the one part to extend between the loops on the other part, and then the pintle passed under the loops of one part and over the loops of the other completes the hinge, and without fully inclosin g the pintle.
I claim 1. In a lamp-burner, substantially such as described, the hinge constructed by knuckles formed by striking up from the body, an intermediate knuckle struck down from the chimney-holder, and a wire pintle through between the said knuckles, substantially as described.
2. In a lamp-burner, substantially such as described, the hinge constructed by knuckles formed by striking up from the body, an intermediate knuckle struck down from the chimney-holder, and a wire pintle through the said knuckles, and a stop, a, on the body outside the hinge, substantially as described.
RUSSELL B. PERKINS.
