UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDSON L. BRYANT, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WALLACE &
/ SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,929, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed June 29, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDsoN L. BRYANT, of
' Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a sectional view; Fig. 2, an under side view, looking up.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of lamp-burners which are provided with vertical springs to engage the chimney by frictional contact; and the invention consists in extending arms from the base of the burner outward to support the chimney-rest,
and inserting the fixed ends of the spring between said arms and the chimney-rest, whereby a single rivet secures each arm and spring to the chimney-rest, as more fully hereinafter described.
2 A represents the base of the burner, of the usual form; B, the chimney-rest, also of the usual form, the cone and wick-tube arranged in the usual manner. From the base A the arms C-preferabl y four-extend radially out- 0 ward to and are bent so as to form a support for the chimney-rest, as seen in Fig. 2.
D D are the springs, their upper ends in substantially the usual form to takeabearing upon the chimney, the lower end, d, turned in be- 5 low the chimney rest and arm C and up through an opening, h, in the arm, taking a bearing between the arm and the rest, and then a rivet, 6, introduced through the three parts to secure them together.
(No model.)
This construction makes the burner of the 4.0 strongest possible character and prevents the detachment of the springs unless by something more than ordinary usage. The arms 0, extending as they do to the edge of the chimneyrest, take a long bearing thereon, which not 5 only strengthens the arm, but adds to the strength of the chimney-rest and prevents that from being bent downward. The insertion of the spring through the arm back of its outer end increases the length of the spring and permits this end and point of attachment to come between the chimney-rest and arm.
I am aware that a chimney-rest, arms which support it, and the chimney-spring have been secured together by a single rivet through the three parts. I therefore do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming such construction.
I elaim- In a lamp-burner substantially such as described, the combination of the base A, provided with arms C, extending radially outward therefrom, said arms constructed with an opening, h, near their outer end, a chimney-rest, B, bearing on said arms outside the opening h, and springs D, extending up to support the chimney, their lower end turned inward beneath the end of the arms, thence upward through the opening 11, in the arms to a position between the chimney-rest and arms, and there secured byrivets through the said springs and arms in rear of the opening h, substantially as described.
