LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,711, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed April 19, 1892. Serial No. 429,812- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OSMOND FERGUSSON, merchant, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 190 Eglinton Road, Woolwich, London, England, have invented an Improved Traveling Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved lamp for use when traveling, which may be attached to a book or other article, and has for its object to provide a lamp adapted for this purpose which will give a clear and uniform light for some time and be of very cheap construction, so that a fresh lamp may be used when one has burned out.
The complete lamp consists of two parts, the lamp or container for the wick and wax or oil,and a holder for the lamp. The holder is stamped or otherwise formed out of a single piece of thin sheet metal, such as tin, and comprises a reflector, means for supporting the lamp, 2. book clip and a hook for suspending. The lamp is formed from two pieces of metal, concave, with a rim, the rim of one piece beinglarger than that of the other and bent round it forming a circular container, with a suitable neck through which the wick passes.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 shows the holder as stamped out, before being made ready for the lamp, Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively a front and side elevation of the lamp and holder complete, and Fig. 4 is a'plan of the lamp or container.
1 is the upper circular part forming the reflector, being made concave in order to direct the light better, and having at its top a small projecting piece 2, turned over to form a hook. At the lower part of the holder is the book clip 3, formed by the tongue 4 stamped out of the enlarged end, connected to the reflector by the narrow strip 5.
6, 6 are two arms projecting from each side of the connecting strip at a short distance below the reflector and 7 is a small tongue a little lower down.
8 is the lamp or container with neck 9 at top, the flange being formed by the rimsabove mentioned. The neck as shown in D Fig. 4 is six sided forming an opening, wedge the bottom of the container and projecting a little through the neck. The arms 6 are bent round in front, their ends being turned so that they retain the flanges of the lamp and the tongue 7 is bent at right angles, the lamp 8 being slipped between the ends of the arms 6 and supported on the tongue 7.
In using the lamp, it is attached to the book or other article desired to be illuminated, by means of the clip,or is suspended in anysuitable manner by the hook 2.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a traveling lamp, the combination of the reflector I hook clip 3 connecting strip 5, supporting arms 6 and tongue 7, all formed from one piece of metal with a lamp or container 8 held by the arms 6 and tongue 7 substantially as described and shown.
2. In a traveling lamp the combination of a reflector 1, hook 2, supporting arms 6, and tongue 7, projecting from the part 5, all formed from a single piece of metal, with a lamp or container 8, held by the arms 6 and tongue 7, and formed of two pieces of concave metal, each having a rim and projecting piece, one rim being bent round the other, forminga hollow case with a neck at the edge, formed bythe projecting pieces through which the wick extends.
3. A container 8, formed of two pieces of concave metal each havinga rimand projecting piece, one rim being bent round the other,
forming a hollow case with a neck 9 having a wedge shaped opening on either side of the wick as shown for the purpose specified.
