UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANK A. lVARDVELL, OF METI-IUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
PICKER FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 586,298, dated July 13, 1897.
Application filed December 29, 1896. Serial No. 617,323. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may con/cern.:
Beit known that I, FRANK A. WAEDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Methuen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loom-Pickers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in loom-pickers; and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l represents a perspective View showing the parts assembled together on a pickerstaff for use. Fig. 2 represents alongitudinal section of the invention. Fig. 3 represents a cross-section on the line 8 3, shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section on the line 4 4, shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a detail top plan view of the metal loop or binder and pickerecasing. Fig. G represents a detail perspective view of the picker; and Fig. 7 represents a detail perspective view of the metal loop or binder and picker-casing, showing in dotted lines the picker before being inserted in the picker-casing.
Similar letters refer to similar parts Whereever they occur on the differentparts of the drawings.
In the drawings, Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, A represents a loom picker-staff, as usual, which is adapted to receive the metal loop or binder B, which is preferably secured to such staff by means of a screw C. (Shown in Figs. 2 and 3.)
In one piece with the loop or binder B is preferably made the picker casing or shield B', as shown, in which is retained the picker or filling D, preferably made of leather or other suitable material.
If so desired, the picker casing or shield B may be dispensed with 5 butin practice I prefer to employ such in connection with the metal loop or binder B, as shown in the drawings.
The loop or binderB is made as a skeleton frame and has at its rear portion a vertical, preferably rectangular, perforation b of sufficient size to receive the picker-stad, as shown. The forward portion of said skeleton loop has a reduced perforation b', which forms a continuation of the opening l), but is of a reduced width as compared with the opening b for a purpose as will hereinafter be more fully described.
The pickerD has a shank d", adapted to fit the interior of the loop or binder-opening b', said shank terminating at its upper end as a head d of a width equal to the interior width of the opening b in the loop or binder B, as shown.
In assembling the parts together for use the picker D is first put up from below through the picker-stad slot b in the loop or binder B and then moved forward into the narrow slot b and into the shield or casing B, if such is used, after which the picker-staff A is pushed through the slot b and secured to the loop or binder B by means of the screw C or other suitable or equivalent fastening device. It will thus be seen that the picker or filling D will be most firmly secured in place within the reducedslot b' of the loop or binder B, as it cannot move upward on account of the lower increased size of said picker, and it is prevented from moving downward on account of the increased head d. The picker-staff holds it from going backward and the forward end of the loop or binder B prevents it from moving forward, and it is thus firmly locked in position relative to the loop or binder and the picker-staff.
As before stated, the picker casing or shield B' maybe dispensed with, particularly in slow looms running on heavy goods; but for other purposes I prefer to use such casing or shield.
The invention is very simple, and by its means a picker or filling may readily be inserted in the loop or binder-and firmlysecured therein, when the picker-staff is attached to said loop or binder, as hereinabove set forth and described.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is-` l. In aloom-picker,in combination a pickersta a loop or binder having a perforation l), adapted to receive said staff, and a continuous reduced perforation b', at its front portion, a picker or filling D, having a shank d', adapted to fit the reduced opening b' in the loop or binder and a head d, adapted to be introduced through the enlarged loop or binderopening b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
IOO
' larged loop or binder-opening b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony. whereof I have signed my name to this speoiiioation, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, on this 12th day 15 rof December, A. D. 1896.
FRANK A. WARDXVELL. Vitnesses:
