AMUSEMENT DEVTCE.
Application filed June 13, 1919, Serial No. 305,119.
To c-Zt col/m it may concern:
Be it known that we, Anoiqzo B. CHUATE and LOUIS J. PIGHA, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Amusement Device, of which the following is a specification.
An object of this invention is to provide an amusementdevice for children which can be used as a coaster, the parts of said device being arranged to produce greater stability and being selectively positioned and separable so that. the device can serve a wider range of usefulness. hlore particularly the inventionis provided with a staff which is arranged back of the iliorward anti.- friction roller or carrier support to produce greater stability. A handle bar is provided and a knee rest. both of which can be selectively and independently positioned at dif ferent'elevations so as to accommodate the device for use by children of different heights. The invention further is provided with a foot rest and with a device to be used from time to time for arrying packages. With these advantages and other objects in view, our invention comprises the features of construction and combination of parts here inafter more particularly described and claimed,
In the accom aanyin; drawings forming part of this specifioation Fig. l is a perspective view of our invention; 2 a perspective view of the package receptacle; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detail portion of. the knee rest: Fig. "1 is a section taken on the plane 47W4?""41 of Fig. 1 and 5 is a section of a detail taken on the plane 55-5 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing A indicates the base of the device which resembles a long narrow plate having the single roller 2 journaled below its forward end and a pair of antifriction rollers 3 journaled below its back end. said base being adapted to run upon said rollers when in use. B indicates the front or staff which is substantially vertical although this position is not essential as it may be arranged slightly inclined to the base if itis desired. The lower end of this staff is secured to the base by the brackets 4 and by a tongue and groove connection 5 (see Fig. 5). This staff is mounted hack of the forward supporting roller 2 so as to give greater stability to the device when in use Specification of Letters Patent.

and so that the device will not tip forvmrdly as if the forward roller support were positioned directly below or back of the stali. Mounted immediately adjoining the lower end of the staff is a horizontal oot support 6, which is in the form of a bar let into the staff by the groove 7 and detachably secured to the staff by the bolt 8. The groove 7 pre vents the foot rest from turning on the bolt and co-operates with the bolt in looking the rest firmly on the staff.
Arranged above the foot rest is a knee rest C which resembles a horizontally arranged plate or bar extending rearwardly a short distance from the front above the base, said knee rest being secured to the front by means of a pair of tongues 9, (see Fig. 3), which are adapted to fit closely into one of the pairs of grooves or notches 10 in the front to form a separable and rigid connection. In addition to the connecting means described between the knee rest, and front, a stud 11 is formed on the end of the knee rest between the pair of tongues 9, said stud beingadapted to be inserted through the opening 12 in the front adjoining the companion pair of notches 10in which the knee rest is seated, and a key 13 is inserted through any one of the openings 14 andlt in the stud on the front side of the staff to lock the knee rest in place. One opening 12 is provided between each pair of notches 10 so that the X1166 rest and seat can be secured at any selective elevation on the staft. The stud 11 also projects through opening. '16 in the wall of a bundle carrier or article receptacle D and the ,key madeto engage the wall of the receptacle through which the stud projects to interlock the receptacle and knee rest and seat on the staff. The opening 14" in the stud 11 is provided so that when desired the bundle carrier D can be removed and the key inserted through said perforation to hold the knee rest firmly on the staff. The wall of the bundle carrier which is perforated to receive the stud 11 is provided with a pair of upright cleats 17 which are adapted to rest along the side edges of the staff to prevent the article receptacle from turning. These cleats are provided with downwardly and rearwardly inclined slots 18 which are adapted to receive pins 19 on the side edges of the staff for the purpose of securing the bundle carrier on the staff independently of the fastening means on the knee rest when desired, Said slots 18 and pins l9 provide a separable coupling means which can be used temporarily and the coupling means on the knee rest provides a more permanent means of attachment. The opening 16 is elongated to admit the end of the stud 11 when the receptacle is hung from the pins 19 irrespective of the position of the knee rest. Arranged above the knee rest is a horizontal handle bar'20 which may be seated in any one of th series of slots 21 to assist in holding it upon the staff. This handle bar is additionally fastened upon the staff by the removable bolt 22 passing through the forth within the scope of the handle bar and through a vertical slot 23 in the staff. Thus by positioning the handle bar in any one of the slots 21 and securing itat said selected elevation by means oflthe 7 bolt 22 the device can be used more readily by children of different heights. The device can also be used by children of different heights due to the selective positioning of the knee rest on the staff. Obviously the knee rest can be used. by a small. child as a seat while a larger child simultaneously rides and propels the device. The entire structure due to its construction is strong,
rig-id, durable and inexpensive to produce. In accordance wlth the patent statutes we have described the principles of opera rier rollers arranged below its forward and back ends, astaif mounted upon the forward end ofsaid base-at a distance back of the forward carrying rollers to stabilize the tie vice against tipping forwardly, a. handle member upon the upper end of said staff and a knee rest extending backwardly from said staff above said base.
2, An amusement device, comprising, in combination, a base having antifriction carrier elements arranged below its forward and back ends, a staff mounted upon the forward end of said base back of said forward carrying element, a handle member detachably secured to said staff at any one of a number of selective elevations and a knee rest extending backwardly from the staff above said base. a
3. An amusement device, comprising,-in combination, a base, antifriction carrier elements arranged below the forward and back ends of saidbase, a staff mounted upon the forward end of said base back of said forward carrying element and having-a handle member upon its upper end detachablyl se cured thereto at any one of, the number of selected elevations, a foot rest secured to the lower end of said staff, and aknee rest secured to said staff and extending rearwardly therefrom above said foot rest.
7 l. An amusement device comprising in combination, a base having antifriction carrier elements arranged below its forward and back ends,-a staff mounted upon the forward end of said base back of said forward carrying element, said staff having a series of transverse slots anda vertical slot, intercepting said transverse slots, a handle bar adapted to be seated in any one of said. transverse slots, a bolt passing through said bar and through said vertical slot to detaclr ably secure the handle bar upon said staff while seated in any one of the transverse slots, a knee rest extending rearwardly from and mounted upon said staff above said base and arbundle carrier detachably mounted upon. said staff, 7
